Charlie Cummings analyzes the official Canadian 26-man 2026 World Cup roster after its announcement on Tuesday.
The World Cup roster rollouts are almost done. Tonight, we get to learn the 26-man roster Canada will bring to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the host nations. No time for fluff, let’s get into the roster and analyze the major decisions being made.
Goalkeepers: Dayne St. Clair (Inter Miami), Maxime Crépeau (Orlando City), Owen Goodman (Crystal Palace FC)
Defenders: Alistair Johnston (Celtic), Derek Cornelius (Olympique Marseille), Richie Laryea (Toronto FC), Niko Sigur (Hajduk Split), Joel Waterman (Chicago Fire FC), Luc de Fougerolles (Fulham), Moïse Bombito (OGC Nice), Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Alfie Jones (Middlesbrough)
Midfielders: Stephen Eustáquio (FC Porto), Ismaël Koné (Sassuolo Calcio), Tajon Buchanan (Villarreal), Mathieu Choinière (LAFC), Ali Ahmed (Norwich City), Nathan Saliba (RSC Anderlecht), Liam Millar (Hull City), Marcelo Flores (Tigres UANL), Jacob Shaffelburg (LAFC), Jonathan Osorio (Toronto FC)
Forwards: Jonathan David (Juventus), Cyle Larin (Southampton), Tani Oluwaseyi (Villarreal), Promise David (Royale Union Saint-Gilloise)
First things first, breathe a sigh of relief, Team Canada fans. Alphonso Davies is on the roster. His injuries are a constant worry, and threatened to keep him out of the entire tournament. This is at least a sign they believe he will be available for most, if not all, of the group stage. As the best player on the team, so much of the team’s chance to get into the knockout stage hinges on Davies’ availability. Ralph Priso-Mbongue seems to have been the odd man out with Davies back in the fold.
On the whole, there weren’t many big surprises. Junior Hoilett could have made the squad over Promise David, but at 35 years old, he doesn’t have much left in the tank. Some of the youngsters with international caps like Daniel Jebbison and Jacen Russell-Rowe, didn’t make the cut, with manager Jesse Marsch opting for more experience.
Canada opens its World Cup Group B campaign on Friday, June 12, against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Canadian team is at +200 to win the group outright and -750 to qualify from the group.
