The iconic “Banned” colorway comes back on May 2 in a summer-ready low with nostalgic nods to MJ’s legendary AJ1 myth.
Jordan Brand is getting ready for summer by bringing one of its most iconic OG colorways of the Air Jordan 1 back in a low-cut just in time for shorts SZN.
That’s right, the “Banned” Air Jordan 1 is dropping in a low top edition this week with several nods to its deep history in the sneaker game.
The 2026 edition of the Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Banned” drops on the SNKRS app and other Jordan Brand accounts on Saturday, May 2 at 10 a.m. ET for a retail price of $145 USD.
The Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Banned” is not an original low top colorway of the Air Jordan 1 from 1985, but rather is inspired by one of the most famous OG colorways of all time and its equally famous marketing campaign, even if that campaign stretched the truth a bit.
The “Banned” 1 Lows take their inspiration from the “Banned” Air Jordan 1 and its famous commercial that reminded viewers that the NBA could try to stop MJ from wearing the Jordan 1s on the court in 1985, but they couldn’t stop you from buying them.
Of course, the NBA actually didn’t ban the Air Jordan 1, but rather the Nike Air Ship. But, let’s not focus on that and instead appreciate how Nike took what could have been a disaster and turned it into an advantage.
The Air Jordan 1, boosted by the notion of being forbidden fruit, became an instant hit. Nike sold over 4 million pairs in its first year and the shoe was released in multiple colorways and multiple configurations, including a low cut. These 2026 “Banned” 1 Lows pay tribute to the iconic AJ1 commercial in several ways, including a red X on the back heel tab in place of the Wings logo, the 10.18.84 “banned” date on the sockliner and the script from the commercial on the insoles.
On the right insole, it says:
On September 15th 1984 Nike created a revolutionary new basketball shoe.”
On the left insole, it says:
On October 18th 1984 they were thrown out of the game.”
Aside from those details and special packaging, these are your typical Air Jordan 1 Low OG, with a full-grain leather upper rendered in Varsity Red and black with traditional “Banned” Jordan 1 colorblocking. Jordan Brand has been making the Swoosh look slightly larger, as it should be, on the 1 Low OGs of late, and it looks like the leather should be of a decent quality. Of the colorway, the description on SNKRS states:
When MJ stepped onto the court in the now legendary “Banned” colorway, he knew he was changing the game. “Banned” reemerges on this AJ1 Low to remind players that when it comes to style, some rules were made to be broken.
As I’ve noted several times of late, Air Jordan 1s are not as popular as they once were. That’s reflected in the fact that several sizes are going for right around retail on StockX, with the shoe seeing an average price of $188 on 371 sales over the last three months on the platform. That represents just a 6 percent price premium.
All that being said, these are a stellar summer shoe and will look great with shorts, so I don’t know that they’re going to be available at discount like some other recent Jordan releases. My advice would be if you want a pair, don’t sleep on them. Best of luck to everyone looking to pick up a pair!
