Meghan Townsley previews Wednesday’s WNBA matchup between the Las Vegas Aces and Connecticut Sun and provides her best pick.
Bring on the W! On Wednesday, the 1-1 Las Vegas Aces head to Connecticut to take on the 0-2 Sun, looking to continue asserting their dominance as the reigning champions while the Sun search for their first win of the season. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. ET, with Las Vegas listed as 14.5-point favorites and the total sitting at 172.5 on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Let’s get into it!
The defending champions were stunned in their opener against the Mercury, falling 99-66 while shooting just 41% from the field and 21% from deep. Vegas quickly bounced back, though, routing the Sparks 105-78 behind a 22-point performance off the bench from Chennedy Carter.
A’ja Wilson, as expected, still delivered with 19 points, but has totaled just eight rebounds through her first two games. Part of that dip can be attributed to the added frontcourt size with the addition of 6’4″ Brianna Turner, but something says Wilson will find her way back to a double-double soon enough.
Las Vegas dominated the paint in its last outing, outscoring LA 62-40 while also adding 26 points off turnovers. Jackie Young, a huge contributor to last year’s title run, has started this season strong, putting up 20 points and nine assists last game while shooting an efficient 66% from the field. If one thing is clear, that loss to the Mercury was a shock to Vegas’ system. Even with a favorable matchup against an 0-2 Sun team, the Aces will be looking to erase that early blemish. And in case you forgot, this is a team that closed last regular season on a ridiculous 16-0 run and still holds the second-shortest odds (+400 on DraftKings Sportsbook) to win it all.
On the other side is a Connecticut Sun team that looks outmatched early. The addition of 10-time All-Star Brittney Griner brings size and experience, but a young roster — combined with uncertainty around the franchise’s future — doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Still, there are some bright spots. Last year’s No. 7 pick Aneesah Morrow has impressed, totaling 32 points and 22 rebounds while shooting 7-of-15 from the field in both games. As a team, though, Connecticut has struggled, shooting just 39.5% from the field through two games, including an egregious 18% from three in its opener against the Liberty. Diamond Miller is another young name to watch, putting up 16 and 13 points, respectively, while adding three steals on the season.
The Aces have the four-time MVP, are the reigning champions, and are getting 20+ point production off the bench. Connecticut is young, rebuilding, and simply outmatched in this one.
