After nearly making the World Series last season, the Mariners had high expectations heading into 2026. April hasn’t been all that special, however, as Seattle is 14-16. On the bright side, the Athletics lead the AL West with a 15-13 record, and there’s many more months to improve.

The Mariners have one of the best starting rotations in the majors—at least by name on paper. Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryan Woo and Luis Castillo have all shown excellence throughout their careers, though not all have lived up to expectations this year. Gilbert falls into this category as Tuesday’s starting pitcher has a 4.36 ERA and has allowed 35 hits across six starts and 33.0 innings.

The season is still young, and Gilbert isn’t too far off his typical ERA. He’s held an ERA between 3.20 and 3.73 in each of the past four seasons. The only time he was over 4.00 was in his rookie season (2021).

His counterpart tonight is Joe Ryan, who has a similar career. Both pitchers debuted in the 2021 season, although Ryan’s first year was much shorter. Nonetheless, both starters have held mid-3 ERAs for the majority of their careers.

Ryan’s 2026 campaign has been better, as he owns a 3.90 ERA and has allowed 25 hits in 32.1 innings and six starts. The worry is his most recent start against the Mets, who average the fewest runs per game in MLB. He allowed four earned runs and seven hits in five frames.

It’s possible that game was a fluke and that Ryan can bounce back in this outing. Seattle averages 4.07 runs per game, which ranks 24th in the majors. Minnesota, however, ranks seventh in this category, creating a challenge for Gilbert on the road.

Ryan only has one outing in which he allowed zero earned runs. Gilbert has none. While neither pitcher has had a disastrous performance this season, I’m not overly confident in either’s form at the moment.
