Yesterday during Apple’s WWDC keynote, the company announced a pair of new AirPods features coming in iOS 27. And now, to go alongside the iOS 27 developer beta, Apple has released new AirPods beta firmware with expected support for the latest features.

AirPods beta firmware debuts to complement iOS 27 beta

Just like any other Apple device, AirPods are regularly updated with new firmware that often comes with brand new features.

And yesterday alongside introducing iOS 27 for iPhone, Apple also revealed some of the latest AirPods features coming this fall. These include custom EQ and Apple GymKit syncing.

In order to use the new AirPods features, you’ll need an iPhone running the iOS 27 developer beta and also the just-released beta firmware for AirPods.

The new firmware is available for AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Pro 2, as well as AirPods 4.

Historically, installing AirPods beta firmware has been a convoluted process involving Xcode on the Mac. But last year, Apple made beta firmware significantly more accessible.

Now, you can opt into the AirPods developer beta inside your AirPods’ settings in the iPhone’s Settings app.

There’s an ‘AirPods Beta Updates’ menu inside this Settings screen where you can opt into beta firmware.

From there, the new firmware will automatically install in the background, as detailed here.

Just note that as with all beta software, pre-release firmware could introduce unexpected bugs and performance issues on your AirPods. You might be better off waiting for the public beta next month instead.

Are you running Apple’s beta firmware for AirPods, and have you noticed any significant changes? Let us know in the comments.
