NBC News has new reporting tonight on one of the two credible notes authorities say they received regarding the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie.

Citing three sources, an update from the outlet said, “The second note indicated the 84-year-old had died. It did not offer an apology or any request for payment for the release of her body.”

The notes were sent to TMZ and KOLD-TV, a Tucson station.

The second message prompted a February 7 video from daughter Savannah Guthrie and her siblings in which they offered to pay for the return of her remains.

“We received your message, and we understand,” Savannah Guthrie says in the video. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”

At that point, the elder Guthrie had been missing for about six days. Authorities believe she was taken against her will, and said that blood marks found on the porch of her home matched her DNA, while a security camera had been unplugged.

Federal investigators have collected DNA from someone other than Nancy Guthrie on her property. The FBI said it obtained a sample from a glove that was found near her abode that appears to match a pair worn by the masked and armed individual spotted on doorbell camera footage previously released by the government agency. The analysis was last awaiting “quality control and official confirmation” before results were to be compared against known DNA profiles in a national database.
