Immediately after the season for the Pittsburgh Penguins came to a close at the hands of the in-state rival Philadelphia Flyers, speculation began to grow about the future of Hall of Fame team icon Evgeni Malkin.

Malkin completed the final year of his contract, and had the chance to become an unrestricted free agent. Given his age, it wasn’t a sure thing that Penguins GM Kyle Dubas would be quick to offer him a new extension, and there was even the possibility that Malkin could choose to leave the only NHL home he’s ever had for a team with a more sure chance of winning the Stanley Cup.

However, all that speculation has officially been put to rest today with a recent announcement from the club.

Evgeni Makin Is Officially Staying With The Pittsburgh Penguins For Another Season

On Tuesday afternoon, the Penguins announced that Malkin had agreed to a one-year contract extension, bringing him back for what will be his 21st season with the club.

“Over the last several weeks, myself and Dan Muse have had very open discussions with Evgeni and his camp about him returning for the 2026-27 season, how his role will evolve and what all of our expectations are at this stage of Evgeni’s career and the current stage in the evolution of the Penguins,” Penguins GM Kyle Dubas said in a statement Tuesday.

“The result of that process is Evgeni returning to the Penguins for his 21st season with the club.”

Dubas continued:

“Last season, Evgeni’s on-ice performance continually showed that he is able to produce at a great level and help the Penguins take strides,” Dubas said. “Off the ice, he showed tremendous leadership in helping our young Russian and Russian-speaking players adapt to our program and our city.”

This past season, Malkin scored 19 goals with 42 assists while being limited to 56 games played.
