The Houston Rockets finally have clarity on Kevin Durant — and it’s not the update they were hoping for with their season hanging in the balance.

Durant is expected to miss Game 5 of the Rockets’ first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers, according to ESPN insider Shams Charania. This major development delivers a significant blow just as Houston tries to build momentum.

“Kevin Durant has missed the last couple of games with injuries. I’m told he’s expected to miss Game 5,” Charania reported Tuesday. “He’s got a bone bruise in his sprained left ankle that’s led to stiffness, swelling, a lack of mobility. This is a two- to three-week injury in the regular season.”

If Durant is officially ruled out, it would mark his fourth absence of the series, leaving the Rockets to once again navigate a must-win scenario without their best player.

Kevin Durant Injury Status Remains Major Concern for Rockets

Durant’s injury has been one of the defining storylines of the series.

The superstar forward initially missed Game 1 with a bruised right knee before returning in Game 2, only to suffer a sprained left ankle that has since sidelined him for multiple games. The combination of the ankle sprain and accompanying bone bruise has proven especially limiting, affecting his mobility and explosiveness — critical components of his offensive game.

Rockets head coach Ime Udoka acknowledged before Game 4 that the team has prioritized long-term health over short-term urgency.

“To put him out there at 50% would be a disadvantage for us,” Udoka said. “There’s going to be some pain, and it’s just a matter of swelling and lack of mobility.”

Despite around-the-clock treatment, the lingering effects of the bone bruise — not just swelling — have prevented Durant from making the necessary progress.

Rockets Show Fight Without Durant in Game 4 Win

Even without Durant, the Rockets showed resilience in Game 4, delivering a convincing 115-96 victory to avoid a first-round sweep.

Amen Thompson led the way with 23 points, while Tari Eason added 20 in a balanced scoring effort that saw all five starters reach at least 16 points. Alperen Şengün contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds as Houston capitalized on Lakers turnovers and controlled the pace throughout.

“I’m proud of the guys,” Thompson said. “Backs against the wall, us coming to perform.”

The win not only kept the series alive but also reinforced Udoka’s belief that the Rockets can compete — even without their franchise centerpiece.

“You obviously don’t want to get swept,” Udoka said. “Guys have pride. The focus was good today… it was a good carryover.”

Game 5 Pressure Mounts With Durant Likely Out

Still, the reality remains: replacing Durant’s production is nearly impossible.

The 37-year-old averaged 26.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists during the regular season while missing just four games, making his absence at this stage particularly damaging.

Game 5 now becomes a test of whether Houston’s depth and energy can compensate once more.

The Rockets must win Wednesday night in Los Angeles to extend the series further, with tip-off set for 7:00 PM PT (10:00 PM ET) on ESPN.

Without Durant, the margin for error remains razor-thin. But after rediscovering their offensive rhythm in Game 4, Houston at least enters Game 5 with belief — even if their biggest star is likely to remain on the sideline.
