Luis Gil kept it real when discussing his stellar outing for the Yankees vs. the Red Sox

The New York Yankees are on a roll, as they picked up their fourth-straight win on Tuesday night over the Boston Red Sox. Thanks to a dominant night from their pitching staff, the Yanks cruised to a shutout 4-0 victory, and while the bullpen shut the door on this one, it was starting pitcher Luis Gil who led the way in this one.

In his first two starts of the year, Gil was a bit shaky for New York, but Boston had no answers for him on Tuesday night, as he hurled 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and three walks while striking out two during his time on the mound. After the game, Gil opened up on his best start of the season, revealing what he believes worked best for him against the Red Sox.

Luis Gil Dishes on Shutout Outing vs. Red Sox

Gil has found himself in an odd spot to begin the 2026 campaign. While he’s part of the starting rotation for now, that could change soon with both Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon closing in on a return to the majors. Once they get back on the mound, that could force manager Aaron Boone to stick Gil in the bullpen for the foreseeable future.

While he struggled in his first two starts, giving up seven earned runs through nine total innings of work, Gil was spectacular against the Red Sox. It’s worth noting that Boston’s offense is ice cold right now, which may have worked in Gil’s favor, but you still have to be throwing good stuff if you give up only two hits over 6.1 innings.

For now, all Gil can do is get as many outs as possible whenever he finds himself on the hill. After this dominant outing, Gil revealed what he believed helped him shut down the Red Sox, as he clearly feels this is the sort of performance he can build off of as he looks to hang onto his spot in the starting rotation.

“Definitely a good outing,” Gil said through his interpreter, Marlon Abreu, after the game. “I think the key tonight was just mixing pitches very well.”

Luis Gil’s Strong Outing Makes Aaron Boone’s Decision Even Tougher

Obviously, when Cole and Rodon return, they are going to be included in the starting rotation. Max Fried is also a lock to stay put, as is Cam Schlittler, who has been dominant early on this season. That will leave Gil competing with Ryan Weathers and Will Warren for the final spot in the rotation, and right now, it seems like Gil is on the outside looking in when it comes to that battle.

Both Weathers and Warren have been more consistent than Gil so far this season, and while Gil has a track record of success as a starter, that may not be enough for him to hold onto his spot in the rotation. There’s no doubt that he is putting pressure on Boone, though, and once Cole and Rodon are activated off the injured list, the Yanks are going to be forced to make some tough decisions on their starting rotation.
