A group of masked federal officers took a man into custody after forcing him from his car Wednesday morning in Sunnyside, according to video and witness accounts.
Charlie Steinberg, 17, was walking to a friend’s house on Mangels Avenue shortly before 8:15 a.m. when she saw a large SUV pull up.
Steinberg, the daughter of a Standard editor, said people got out wearing masks and bulletproof vests and carrying rifles. At least one wore a vest that said “police federal officer.” Steinberg rushed inside and alerted her friend’s father, Manoj, about what was transpiring outside.
Manoj, who asked that his last name be withheld for privacy, said the episode was over in five minutes. He looked out the window and saw law enforcement agents removing a man from his car and pinning him to the ground.
“They went through his pockets, took everything out, and then put him into their car,” Manoj said. The Standard has been unable to confirm which law enforcement agency conducted the operation.
When the officers drove off, they left the man’s car behind. DMV records show the vehicle is registered to Marvin Godoy Calderon.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed in a statement that Calderon, an undocumented immigrant from Peru, is the man its agents arrested.
“He will remain in ICE custody pending the outcome of his removal proceedings,” the statement says.
District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar said authorities have confirmed that officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement took a man into custody and said legal counsel is representing him.
Calderon was cited by San Francisco police for possession of stolen property in 2023. However, San Francisco Superior Court records show no active criminal cases.
Manoj said that Calderon moved into a house on the street in the last few months, and the building houses a rotating cast of renters and sub-renters.
He described his limited interactions with Calderon as pleasant, adding that he didn’t speak much English.
The SF Rapid Response Network, a group that confirms reports of ICE activity, said it received a report of suspicious activity near where the man was taken from his vehicle but has not verified an arrest.
