Two people were killed after a plane crashed into a residence in Akron, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon, local and federal authorities said.

The victims were on board the plane, and no one inside the home reported injuries, according to the Akron Police Department. Calls about the crash began coming in just before 4 p.m., police said.

Only two people were on the Piper PA-28 aircraft that crashed, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the incident, according to the FAA.

The home caught fire following the crash, the Akron Fire Department said in a statement. Videos posted online showed the home’s garage engulfed in flames while sirens sounded in the background.

A small portion of the plane’s tail could be seen in the home’s driveway.

District Fire Chief Sierjie Lash said the scene remained active and that multiple local and state agencies, including the Ohio State Fire Marshal, responded.

“We are letting residents get to their homes,” Lash said. “This is, this is where they live. But we’re keeping the scene — the direct scene — we’re keeping that secure.”

The plane departed from the Akron Fulton Regional Airport, which is about three miles east of the crash site, Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Representatives from the airport did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.
