There are currently three free exhibitions at the Saatchi Gallery.

Spectral Interference

London-based painter Anna Liber Lewis fills the gallery with canvases of varying sizes, featuring energetic splashes and layers of colour that are both abstract and decoratively appealing.

Perspicere: States of Transition

The standout exhibition of the three, if only for the remarkable craftsmanship involved.

Each work is created by wrapping coloured thread around hundreds of carefully positioned nails, layer upon layer, until a photorealistic portrait gradually emerges from thousands of intersecting lines.

Most of the pieces are wall-mounted, although one free-hanging installation features a pair of eyes that seem to follow visitors around the gallery. It’s fascinating to study both from a distance, where the portraits come into focus, and up close, where the complexity of the construction becomes apparent.

Inflorescence

This exhibition brings together new works by artists who featured in the Saatchi Gallery’s Flowers exhibition last year.

The display includes a mix of contemporary works, dominated by some exceptionally large paintings that would require a very substantial wall at home, alongside a series of elegant hand sculptures delicately holding sculpted flowers.

Of the three exhibitions, Perspicere: States of Transition is the one most worth making a special trip to the Saatchi Gallery for. The other two are pleasant enough additions if you’re already visiting the gallery.
