Memory and new controls for ChatGPT
2024-02-13 · via OpenAI News
  • June 3, 2025 update: Memory improvements are starting to roll out for free users. In addition to the saved memories that were there before, ChatGPT now references your recent conversations to provide more personalized responses.
  • Free users have a lightweight version of memory improvements that provides short term continuity across conversations. Memory for Plus and Pro users provides a longer term understanding of the user.
  • You’re in control of ChatGPT’s memory and can turn off referencing “saved memories” or “chat history” at any time in Settings.

  • April 10, 2025 update: Memory in ChatGPT is now more comprehensive. In addition to the saved memories that were there before, it now references all your past conversations to deliver responses that feel more relevant and tailored to you. This means memory now works in two ways: "saved memories" you’ve asked it to remember and "chat history", which are insights ChatGPT gathers from past chats to improve future ones.
  • You’re in control of ChatGPT’s memory. You can turn off referencing "saved memories" or "chat history" at any time in Settings. If you’ve already opted out of memory, ChatGPT won’t reference past conversations by default. You can also ask ChatGPT to change what it knows about you directly in conversation, or use Temporary Chat for conversations that don’t use or update memory. To see what ChatGPT remembers about you, you can also ask it.
  • The more you use ChatGPT, the more useful it becomes. New conversations build upon what it already knows about you to make smoother, more tailored interactions over time. This is available in ChatGPT to Plus and Pro users, and Team, Enterprise, and Edu users in a few weeks.

September 5, 2024 update: Memory is now available to ChatGPT Free, Plus, Team, and Enterprise users. Based on feedback from the earlier test, ChatGPT now lets you know when memories are updated. We’ve also made it easier to access all memories when updates occur—hover over “Memory updated,” then click “Manage memories” to review everything ChatGPT has picked up from your conversations or forget any unwanted memories. You can still access memories at any time in settings.

We’re testing memory with ChatGPT. Remembering things you discuss across all chats saves you from having to repeat information and makes future conversations more helpful.

You’re in control of ChatGPT’s memory. You can explicitly tell it to remember something, ask it what it remembers, and tell it to forget conversationally or through settings. You can also turn it off entirely.

We are rolling out to a small portion of ChatGPT free and Plus users this week to learn how useful it is. We will share plans for broader roll out soon.
