"We thank Massport and our partner agencies for leading this effort and helping amplify what Boston is all about,” Mayor Wu said.
Massport has officially scored the title of World’s Largest Soccer Ball, and will be donating 100 soccer balls to celebrate the achievement, the port authority announced.
Officials from the Guinness World Record handed over the title of World’s Largest Soccer Ball to Massport on Friday for their massive 47.9 foot soccer ball, Massport said in a press release.
The giant soccer ball is currently installed in Piers Park II in East Boston and will be available for viewing until June 18, Massport said.
“The soccer ball serves as a larger-than-life celebration of the FIFA World Cup, helping build excitement and community pride as Boston prepares to welcome visitors from around the world,” the port authority wrote.
The previous world record was set in Doha, Qatar in 2013 and measured 38 feet and 11.8 inches, Massport said previously.
The Boston soccer ball was created by Britten, Inc. and Creative Inflatables in Ohio and was measured in the facility building by “professional surveyors” before it was shipped to Boston for inflation, Massport said.
As part of its initiative, Massport plans to partner with Soccer Without Boarder- Massachusetts to donate 100 (smaller, but otherwise identical) soccer balls to youth groups and community organizations across the state, Massport said.
After the soccer ball is taken down, Massport plans to reuse and recycle as much of the ball as possible, the port authority said.
“As a proud host of the FIFA World Cup, and now home to a new world record, we will continue to raise the bar and show the world our passion for the moments that bring us together. We thank Massport and our partner agencies for leading this effort and helping amplify what Boston is all about,” Mayor Wu said.
