Diversity drives discovery. When we broaden access to scientific education and research, we unlock new ideas, perspectives and solutions to the world’s most complex challenges.

In March, the world celebrated International Women’s Day – a fitting moment to honour inspiring women at the heart of CERN & Society Foundation projects.

Non-member State Summer Student Programme

Last summer, 24 women from Non-member States were supported through the Foundation to attend the annual CERN Summer Student Programme. Reflecting on her experience as a woman on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, Annabel shared:

“It is good to feel equality around. We are having equal conversations; we have equal opinions. Everything is balanced, which feels really nice for a change.”

Non-member State PhD Studentship

Mariana is currently pursuing a PhD on the same experiment through the Non-member State PhD Studentship programme. She describes her experience as follows:

“Working in this international environment has been both challenging and rewarding, allowing me to further develop my scientific skills while contributing to the global effort to better understand the fundamental structure of our universe.”

Zenodo

Zenodo provides a free, global and multidisciplinary platform where researchers can share datasets, software, publications, and other research outputs, enabling scientists to disseminate their work openly and receive credit through persistent DOIs. As Lea, who works on the project, explains:

“This is particularly important for researchers who may face greater barriers in traditional publishing systems – such as women. Zenodo supports a global research commons where women scientists can share their work, gain recognition, and contribute fully to the advancement of knowledge.”

You can support women in science by donating to the CERN & Society Foundation.

If one of these projects particularly speaks to you, then you can also channel your donation directly there:
