Rashee Rice is in jail after violating his probation, and the turbulent Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver picked the worst possible time for his latest lapse of judgment.

Rice is in the final year of his rookie, four-year, $6.5 million contract, and the 2026 season has to be the absolute prove-it year for him.

Physical and extremely effective at gaining yards after the catch, he had 79 catches for 938 yards and seven touchdowns during the regular season — and 262 more yards en route to the Super Bowl LVIII title — of his rookie year in 2024.

And projecting last year’s numbers over a full season, he was on pace for more than 1,200 yards.

But between his NFL-mandated, six-game suspension and injuries, including a concussion and a season-ending lateral collateral ligament (LCL) knee injury, he has missed 25 games the last two years.

To either gain a long-term extension with the Chiefs or earn a lucrative one on the open market, Rice had to prove he could stay healthy and on the straight and narrow.

He’s done just the opposite, heading into the 2026 season.

During May of 2024, he faced one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury, and a Dallas County judge ended up sentencing him to five years probation and 30 days of jail, which could have been served during those five years.

But after testing positive for marijuana, he violated the terms of that probation and resulted in his immediate jail sentence.

“Mr. Rice was taken into custody today in the 194th Judicial District Court for testing positive for THC and ordered to serve the 30 days that he had previously been ordered to serve at a later time — starting today,” the Dallas County DA’s office said in a statement, according to ESPN.

Rice was booked into the Dallas County jail at 1:25 p.m. ET on May 19.

Compounding the issue is that, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, 0ne week before Rice was sentenced, he underwent a clean-up surgery on his right knee to remove loose debris that was causing inflammation.

Now in a Dallas County jail, Rice will be unable to get the type of physical therapy that a professional athlete needs to help recover from surgery. And with knee surgeries, rehab is most important in the early stages of post-operative recovery.

That is only going to make the recovery more difficult for an injury that sounds like it already could be debilitating and wasn’t totally fixed by the initial season-ending LCL surgery.

Because of his jail time, he will miss voluntary Chiefs practices, which begin next week, and the mandatory minicamp, which ends June 11.

The injury should keep him sidelined past that.

That is his immediate future; he has done immeasurable harm to his long-term future.

After his initial car accident, he said it was a “gift and blessing” to be coached by Andy Reid and to catch passes from Patrick Mahomes and that he not only appreciated that opportunity, but also had learned his lesson.

Clearly, he has not done so, and the punishment will be costly.

Rice is likely talented enough to still get a deal somewhere in 2027, but he has cost himself millions of dollars and could have to settle for a one-year contract.
