Sony has just announced its latest over-ear headphones, called the 1000X The Collexion. It comes as its 1000X noise-cancelling range reaches its tenth anniversary. This pair, which has premium build, comes at a higher price than previous models.

Where the most recent over-ear noise-cancelling model, WH-1000XM6, is priced at $459.99 (£399 in the U.K.), the new premium model costs $649 (£550 in the U.K.).
The 1000X The Collexion comes in two colors, black and platinum, and boasts high-end materials to help command the higher price. The materials include what’s described as crafted metal “with a matte sandblasted texture contrasted by hand-polished gloss,” while the ear cups and headband include a specially developed faux leather.
One of the distinct design notes on the WH-1000XM6 was the large power button, easy to find with your finger when the headphones were being worn. Here, the button is less pronounced, but straightforward to locate thanks to it being next to the headphone jack.
There are few buttons on board, but one, called Listening Mode, turns Upmix on and off, which is designed to add spatial audio (Sony calls it 360 Reality Audio) to music, movies and games. The idea is to create the effect of surround-sound, realistic musical effects.

The technology for noise-cancelling is near-identical to that in the WH-1000XM6, which has been widely acclaimed, though because the ear cups here are smaller and lighter, there’s less passive noise-cancelling. Users are unlikely to feel the noise-cancelling is less than superb, Sony says. Meantime, there’s thought to be an uptick in comfort, so users can wear them for longer.
Sony says this is the first headphone to feature DSEE Ultimate, which upscales compressed digital music files in real time, restoring lost detail and dynamic range.
Sony sees the new headphones as the logical next extension of its noise-cancelling series, with higher-end build quality and greater comfort, while evolving features and audio.
Unlike the WH-1000XM6, the new headphones do not fold in on themselves, sitting flat in the distinctive carry case, which is barely bigger than the headphones themselves and comes with a cut-out that works as a carry handle.
Refuting some rumors, the case does include a USB-C cable, snuggled into a discreet pocket.
The new headphones go on sale later in May, and the WH-1000XM6 range is expanded with a new sandstone color.
