In a new interview with Retail Gazette, eBay's Eve Williams discusses the evolving marketplace and why nothing replaces community.
For Eve Williams, VP and General Manager of eBay UK, the next chapter of eBay is already unfolding. AI is opening new paths into eBay’s vast inventory, eBay Live is showcasing seller expertise, and in-person events are bringing eBay closer to its communities. In a recent conversation with Retail Gazette, Williams shared how those shifts are already changing the experience for buyers and sellers.
Surfacing Better Results with AI
A shopper who knows exactly what they want can search for it. The bigger opportunity, according to Williams, is connecting people with relevant inventory they wouldn’t have known to seek out.
“It’s about using AI in a very seamless way to match the items with the intent of the buyer,” she says.
Personalization is key to this, as it can surface more inventory to more shoppers, while new AI tools make it easier for sellers to list that inventory.
Showcasing Sellers With eBay Live
eBay Live is giving seller expertise a bigger stage, and those who stand out are often the ones with a deep knowledge of their goods.
“It’s people who really understand the category they’re selling in, who understand their pieces and who are passionate about it,” she says.
That expertise can become popular programming, as it gives buyers a reason to ask questions and learn from the pro. It can also introduce them to sellers they may continue buying from after the stream ends.
Meeting Communities Where They Gather
For Williams, those connections have a place offline as well. eBay UK has been showing up at Comic-Con, Silverstone, and various seller meetups to join communities where they already gather.
“Often it is all centred on showing up where that community is,” says Williams. “We will continue to show up in real life because we want to be part of those communities.”
In other words? We're putting community front and center, and using AI to create more opportunities for connection.
