Why we come together

Every two years, the Ethereum community comes together at Devcon to collaborate and build toward a more holistic, trustworthy, democratic, and decentralized future. Devcon isn’t about hype or speculation; it’s about creating a more free and open society where technology enhances human potential and aligns with our core values.

For four days, developers, community leaders, and changemakers step out of their silos and gather in one place to share knowledge, align on Ethereum's future direction, and learn from each other. After Devcon, we scatter back into our decentralized lives, but the momentum we create energizes us to keep building.

What to expect at Devcon

Devcon is one big event taking place in one venue for four days in Bangkok, Thailand from November 12-15 2024. Devcon is different from Devconnect, the second event we're organizing.

The Devcon Week calendar features educational events before and after Devcon. We encourage organizers to plan around the main Devcon schedule, as we will not be listing events that take place during Devcon days to keep Devcon the main schelling point.

Speakers

This year, Devcon received nearly 3,000 speaker applications, doubling the number from Devcon VI.

Some highlighted speakers include:

• Vitalik Buterin (Co-founder of Ethereum): Exploring the most relevant topics at the intersection of technology and society.
• Aya Miyaguchi (Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation): Sharing her vision for Ethereum's ecosystem growth and the Infinite Garden.
• Roger Dingledine (Co-founder of The Tor Project): Sharing lessons learned from the Tor community, privacy-by-design, and the cypherpunk ethos.
• Bruno Maçães (philosopher, journalist, politician, and author): Examining how technology is transforming geopolitics, where states and great powers compete to create and control new global systems.
• Hart Montgomery (CTO of the Linux Foundation): Offering insights into open-source project structures and community building.
• Gubsheep (Co-founder of 0xPARC): Exploring programmable cryptography and its impact on dApps and the creation of entirely new digital worlds.

These mini-events within Devcon foster interdisciplinary discussions on topics that matter both to Ethereum and society by bringing together experts from diverse fields. Some key sessions are:

• d/acc Discovery Day: Led by Vitalik Buterin, Vincent Weisser and others, this session explores the d/acc (defensive accelerationism) vision and how we should focus on decentralization and defensive technologies to create a resilient future.

• MUD: Autonomous Worlds & Onchain Games: Organized by 0xPARC, and Lattice, for those interested in autonomous worlds, onchain games, and other complex Ethereum applications.

• Developing on Ethereum: BuidlGuidl will offer hands-on sessions for both beginner and advanced developers to build decentralized applications and write smart contracts. You’ll develop practical skills, receive mentorship, and network with other developers.

• Programmable Cryptography: 0xPARC and others will showcase how second-generation cryptographic primitives such as zero-knowledge proofs, multi-party computation, and fully homomorphic encryption lay the foundation for a more perfect internet.

• Formal Verification Hangout: Informal discussions on the security and reliability of smart contracts and software systems, allowing researchers and developers to connect.

If you’re looking to organize and lead discussions at Devcon, the Discussion Corners are perfect for diving into topics around Ethereum. Reservations for time in Discussion Corners will open to everyone shortly before Devcon.

Community Hubs are spaces, organized by the community, for deep dives into specific Ethereum-related topics and to meet people working in specific Ethereum-related fields. Here are the featured Community Hubs:

• Account Abstraction Hub: Focused on improving user onboarding while staying true to decentralization. Discuss how to advance the Account Abstraction ecosystem, from SDKs and wallets to protocol standards like ERC-4337.
• Adoption Hub: A space for designers, researchers, and marketers to collaborate on web3 adoption strategies, with a focus on improving UX and trust.
• Collective Intelligence Governance Hub: Experts from leading DAOs discuss challenges and innovations in DAO governance design, delegation, accountability, and funding, using collective intelligence to improve DAO governance.
• Community Gardeners Hub: A gathering place for community builders to connect, share global Ethereum initiatives, and explore strategies for effective community growth.
• Onchain Creators Hub: A space to explore onchain creativity, economic models, and tools for accelerating Ethereum’s mainstream adoption.
• Ethereum SEA Hub: Celebrates Southeast Asia’s Ethereum communities, showcasing local projects and fostering cross-collaboration.
• GM Hub: Highlights web3 innovations from underrepresented regions, with a focus on Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Engage in cross-cultural discussions on blockchain’s real-world impact.
• Grants & Impact Hub: A hub for grant programs, researchers, and builders focused on sustainable Ethereum projects, offering workshops on optimizing grant proposals and measuring impact.
• Hacktivism Hub: Explore Ethereum’s cypherpunk values and how blockchain can address privacy, censorship, and human rights, with hands-on discussions and workshops.
• Home Operators Hub: A support space for home node operators and validators and those who want to become one, offering one-on-one troubleshooting and workshops on running nodes with less than 32 ETH and decentralizing Ethereum further.
• Regen Hub: A hub focused on regenerative projects and sustainability within Ethereum, discussing local empowerment and global initiatives.
• Sustaining Open-Source Development Hub: A space to explore open-source business models and discover strategies to sustain open-source public goods within the ecosystem.
• The World of DeSci Hub: Focuses on decentralized science and how web3 technologies are reshaping the scientific landscape, turning science into a public good.
• Women in Web3 World (W3): An inclusive space for women and allies to network, learn, and discuss diversity and inclusion in Ethereum through workshops and fireside chats.

Hacker Cave

Looking for a dedicated space to test new tech and build? The Hacker Cave is equipped with cozy seating, neon cyberpunk lighting, and lush hanging plants. This space will have you in the right mindset to hack on new ideas.

Music & Art Space

Enjoy live music, visuals, and workshops in an immersive art space. Participate in jam sessions, sound healing, or simply enjoy the atmosphere. The Music space is an initiative by the Open-Source Orchestra who wrote this DIP.

Games of Capture and Escape

Join a live escape game that combines cryptography, exploration, and puzzle-solving. Interact with NPCs and unlock secret parts of the venue while progressing through increasingly challenging chapters. Brought to you by Daedalus Industries via this DIP.

Coworking Area, Meeting Rooms & Decompression Room

For those who will be looking for a quiet spot for some deep work at Devcon, there will be a dedicated area with Wi-Fi on site for quiet coworking.

You’ll also be able to reserve meeting rooms, large and small, to hold in-person meetings with your usually remote team, have important one-on-one conversations, or other private discussions.

Devcon will also feature a decompression room, the perfect space to relax, unwind, and let your mind roam. Equipped with hammocks, beds, and massage therapy, it’s designed to help you recharge and stay refreshed throughout the event.

Don't worry, there will be fewer people in suits 😄

The complete programming schedule will be published soon, and we already sold and distributed almost 8,000 tickets. This will be a Devcon you don’t want to miss, and we are excited for you to be a part of it.

We might see some of you even earlier - about a month before Devcon at one of the pop-up cities in Chiang Mai or at other events on the Road to Devcon. Then we’ll all travel together to Bangkok for Devcon, November 12–15, at QSNCC.
