I know our team has heart, a group that gives everything and every moment,
At the start of the game we were tentative not aggressive enough, not sprinting enough but we’re gonna focus on the positives – we’re gonna focus on the response, again good performances off the bench
I wish I had gone to five at the back at half-time to really lock things down. I was thinking about that. I wish I had done that.
I didn’t want to put Alphonso [Davies] in any danger [by bringing him on] but he should be ready for the next match.
We just wanted to continue the energy that has taken place in Canada, that’s the disappointment. I’m disappointed we couldn’t get a win or a draw to keep us here but we’re going to LA and an away crowd. We still want to electrify our country. We’re in the second round, exactly where we want to be.

Bosnia join Canada on four points and finish third in the group, looking very well placed to take one of the eight third-place spots in the Round of 32.

After an awful first half, Switzerland exploited defensive mistakes to go 2-0 up and then Canada finally started to play. They created some good chances, scored a great goal but lacked the attacking quality in the air to finish off a couple of exceptional crosses.
Even so Canada are through to the knockout stages for the first time in their history having lost all three group games in 1986 and 2022.

Johnston flies in at the back post to pump a header from Shaffelburg’s leftw-ing cross straight at kobel.
Link copied to clipboard
Johnston has another chance to hurl a throw into the box, this one from the right. It’s headed back to him and he hangs up a cross towards the far post that has not enough whip and too much hang time making it comfortable for Kobel.
Link copied to clipboard
Marsch tries to pump up the crowd before Johnston launches a long throw in from the left that is headed by Promise David straight at Kobel.

Six minutes of stoppage time to come and Cornelius has another golden chance to equalise but nods Johnston’s deep inswinging cross from the left wide. Promise David jumped in front of him and under the ball which may have put him off.

Millar and Shaffelburg have been penetrating down the wings in the last few minutes.

While Switzerland would be delighted to win the group, nit sure they would be warmly received by the Vancouver crowd for a R32 game having evictedCanada.

Bosnia on the verge of the R32 after Mahmic scores Bosnia and Herzegovina’s third.
Right, ok, I’m definitely calling it now. Bosnia are going to win after scoting their third goal with ten minutes left to play. It is very hot in Seattle but they have kept their cool. That hydration break came at a bad time for Qatar. They were looking good before it but lost their way. The “four quarters” are having a big impact on games.

Marsch takes off his left-back Layea for the left-winger Shaffelburg.

Chance for a smash and grab equaliser for Canada when a cross from the right is put on a plate for Cornelius but the centre-half heads wide.

Switzerland 2 Canada 1 (Promise David). Talk about an impact sub. First touch. Superb goal. Saliba telescopes out his leg above 90 degrees to hook the ball away from Rodriguez then curls a cross with his left on the half-volley beyond the penalty spot where the substitute slides in with his right leg out like a bayonet to stab it in. That should have been a left-foot finish but he managed to score with his right. Fine goal.

Eustaquio’s corner is headed out by Sow but Canada recover the ball about 30 yards out, give it back to Eustaquio who tries to slide it down the left of the box to Saliba but Akanji read the pass and ran over to get there first.

Miller has done well since coming on. Hull’s tricky winger picks out Davd who spins in the box to shoot only for Elvedi to thrust his lower half in to make a full-blooded block which he celebrates in the manner of Ruben Dias.
Link copied to clipboard
The crowd boos Manzambi who stays down too long after a seemingly innocuous coming together. Marsch isn’t happy either and deposits a flea in the fourth official’s ear.
Link copied to clipboard
Cornelius tries to make amends for being suckered by the long ball a few moments ago by earning a corner with a fierce volley that hits a defender. Kobel, after some back and forth in terms of penalty box pinball, ends the attack with a firm punch.
Link copied to clipboard
It’s still 2-1 in Seattle, by the way.
Marsch takes off Larin, Ahmed and Choniere for Miller, Eustaquio and Oluwaseyi.
Link copied to clipboard
Switzerland 2 Canada 0 (Manzambi) Terrible defending and terrible goalkeeping. Long chip up the inside right. Cornelius misjudges the flight, allowing Embolo to drive off De Fougerolles’s shoulder to take the ball and look as if he would lob it over the keeper. Instead he cushions it, lays it off to the galloping Manzambi who hits a firm but straight shot that Crepeau allows to slip beneath his dive. Oh Canada.
Dear oh dear oh dear. Switzerland have doubled their lead and they have the extension to the kind of goalkeeping mistake that will find a home in a Christmas bloopers video. Maxine Crepeau should be re-christened Jacques Clouseau for allowing something so obvious to slip through his fingers. The energy has disappeared from the stadium and Jesse Marsch is cussing like a man who has just received a parking ticket and returned home to find a letter with a speeding fine. It’s all rather quiet.

Good cross from Ahmed from the left, swinging in to Larin in the six-yard box but Akanji managed to hold him off.
Link copied to clipboard
Rodriguez sweeps a chip from left wing to right for Jaquez whose tempting cross is headed out for a throw-in.
Link copied to clipboard
As Ally McCoist points out, Johnston left a gap at the back post for Vargas to strike because he had to tuck in to deal with Embolo and Buchanan did not pivot back to help.
Link copied to clipboard
Switzerland 1 Canada 0 (Vargas) Forty seconds into the half, Manzambi goes flying down the right, burning past Laryea, and then whips over a low cross that Embolo flicks on, accidentally as he was trying to shoot, I think, and Vargas, making a back-post run, meets it perfectly and smashes it into the bottom left corner. That’s silenced the crowd. Four points means there is no fear of eviction from the tournament but they need a point to ensure that they will continue to play in Vancouver.
Bad news for the Canadians, who want to stay in Vancouver, but thank goodness we have a goal. Switzerland have been the better team (that’s not exactly a compliment) but we can only hope that going behind stirs them in the same way it stirred them in Toronto on the opening weekend when they roared back and took a point off Bosnia.
Link copied to clipboard
Not quite the Disgrace of Gijón but there’s a sense that a draw suits both sides and neither seem keen on risking position in the top two to go all out for victory. Embolo has had the best chance but Canada have mounted more (ultimately toothless) attacks.

Ahmed is played in for a shot by David’s smart pass but fires hopelessly wide.

It was a joy watching Granit Xhaka drive Sunderland into Europe last season but he’s not had the same level of impact for Switzerland. He’s just lifted a free-kick that was struck with the same propulsion and force of a field goal attempt in American Football. It’s a tough watch, this one.

Well, well, well. Hassan Al-Haydos, veteran captain making his first start of the tournament, grabs one back.
Not for the first time I may have leapt to a premature conclusion. Bosnia appeared to think the game was already won, started getting lazy and sloppy and conceded just before half time. Qatar got players into the box, which was followed by some dire, passive defending from Bosnia. Hassan Al Haydos pulls one back with a tap-in from six yards.
Link copied to clipboard
Xhaka takes on a shot from a free-kick too far out even for him and pumps it into the crowd.
Link copied to clipboard
While preoccupied with Bosnia for a couple of minutes, there have been a couple of noteworthy moments in Vancouver when Larin snatched at a shot from the left of the box and Kobel saved low to his left. Then Laryea and Embolo are hurt when their heads collide while battling for possession.
Link copied to clipboard
Dzeko’s deflected shot is credited as an own goal for Al Brake.
From the young prospect opening the scoring to the old warrior Edin Dzeko adding a second. It took a massive deflection, in fact he appeared to be trying to put the ball back across goal, but that’s two in five minutes for Bosnia. You suspect that is also game over. Qatar have not looked like scoring one goal let alone two. Bad news for Scotland as Bosnia will finish on four points in their group.
Link copied to clipboard
A comic moment when Xhaka feigned to take a free-kick early when Larin had not retreated, took a swipe at the ball with his left-foot while Larin toed it away and hence scratched/brushed Larin’s shin. The Southampton centre-forward then went down like a bag of hammers, hamming it up in ridiculous fashion, earning himself a booking to match Xhaka’s.

Akanji shepherds a pass down the right of the box invitingly for Buchanan out for another goal-kick.
Link copied to clipboard
Buchanan is on the deck again when he tries to run at Akanji who complains to him and the referee about his horizontal tendencies. The ref agrees and awards a goal-kick.
Link copied to clipboard
Buchanan and Vargas take each other out in the tackle and the referee’s inclination to wave play on is scuppered by them writhing around in some distress. Ah, no. They’re OK. Vargas caught Buchanan’s ankle as the Canada right winger put his foot down to shield the ball.

The Canadians are finding their feet after a tentative start. It would be great to see them progress and play more games in Vancouver, as this stadium looks like one of the best in the tournament – a genuine football arena. Achieving a positive result here would be another huge step for a nation with no real football history. They are clearly quick learners, as the fans have just made their displeasure clear at these odious hydration breaks.

De Fougerolles seems to dwell on the ball when confronted by the pressing Embolo and Manzambi but keeps his composure and turns away from them with impressive nonchalance.
Link copied to clipboard
Canada free-kick on the right after Rodriguez’s foul which Canada think should have resulted in a yellow card but didn’t. Handsome cross into the box finds Choniere whose effort barely troubles Kobel.
Link copied to clipboard
Embolo sets Manzambi off down the left and he gallops into the area with a foal-like gait, losing his footing when bumped by Laryrea who gives him an earful as he rises from the deck. There was contact and no penalty appeal so seemed a little impolite for a Canadian.
Link copied to clipboard
Very late offside flag shows long after Larin runs through alone down the middle. He faces up Kobel who dives to swipe the ball away with his right hand and then Larin centres but the block from the ensuing shot is just as invalid ad Larin’s fluffed chance because the offside call could have come 30 seconds ago. Poor by Larin both to jump the gun so early with his false start and then his confusion and fluffed finish when bearing down on the keeper from 25 yards.
Link copied to clipboard
Embolo has definitely unsettled Cornelius and De Fougerolles with his strength and movement. For the second time in a minute he loses De Fougerolles with a run across his shoulder and this time he is one-on-one with the keeper. All he has to do is slide it down either side but tries to go over the keeper and fires his shot too close to Crepeau who blocks it.
Fascinating to watch Jesse Marsch, born and raised in Wisconsin, belt out the Canadian national anthem as if he came from Winnipeg. There has been a bit of rumpus in recent days, with Marsch having said that when he was assistant to the US Men’s National Team, he used to have to beg players to sing for the Stars and Stripes. It’s rubbed some Americans up the wrong way (of course it has) but Marsch is undeterred and on a mission to take his adopted country into the next phase of the World Cup. Difficult to imagine Thomas Tuchel singing God Save the King with such gusto, mind you.

Foul by Cornelius on Embolo, a shove in the small of the back, gives Switzerland a free-kick just inside the Canada half which is undone by lack of precision.
Link copied to clipboard
The cross comes to naught and Switzerland have a free-kick for a shove inside their own half which brings them a corner when Johnston, the Celtic right-back, has a bit of a flap. The delivery isn’t up to much, though, and Canada see it off easily.
Link copied to clipboard
Cornelius almost leaves a back-pass to Crepeau short but he is alert to the danger of Embolo’s speed and sprints out of his six-yard box to boot it clear. Foolish foul by Jaquez on Ahmed gives Canada a free-kick a yard or so infield from the left corner flag.

Canada kick off and attack up the right with Buchanan before switching over to Laryea on the left but Freuler snuffs out his thrust.
Link copied to clipboard
The Swiss are heart-clutchers when they sing their anthem as so many seem to be. Canada, perhaps reflecting the British tradition, don’t go in for such ostentation. They link arms but were it not a match I’m sure their thumbs would be rigidly clamped to the seams of their trousers.

Canada are playing in all white, Switzerland in all red. A pyrrhic victory over Liverpool (in all red) by Marsch’s Leeds (in all white) kept him in the job for another three months.

Scotland have more than enough to worry about ahead of their final group game against Brazil later but they know the ideal result for them would be a draw between Bosnia and Qatar.
That would mean they both finished on two points and would increase Scotland’s chances of reaching the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.
Bosnia, of course, beat Italy in the play-off to qualify for the tournament and will start as favourites against Qatar.
A win for the Bosnians would take them to four points, increasing the risk that Scotland’s 1-0 goal win over Haiti might not be enough for them to make the last 32 if they lose to Brazil.

Good evening and welcome to live coverage of the final matches in Group B. We’ll be focusing on the game between the top two, hosts Canada and Switzerland, both of whom have four points.
A draw would mean Canada win the group and, more pertinently, allow them to play at home in the round of 32 and the round of 16, should they get there, before the tournament sloughs off the co-host venues for the last eight which contracts to the United States thereon.
Canada, with their famously width-averse, touchline marionette Jesse Marsch, turned around their sluggish start to draw 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina before putting on a show to gub Qatar, who had two players sent off, 6-0. But they paid a heavy price with the compound leg fracture suffered by Sassuolo’s Ismaël Koné which you should avoid at all costs if you were not unfortunate enough to see it happen.
Switzerland, mugged by their own complacency against Qatar when they conceded a 94th-minute own goal to end a match they had dominated with only one point, were pretty awful, too, against Bosnia until the introduction of the galloping Johan Manzambi in the 72nd minute turned a 0-0 yawnfest into a thrilling 4-1 mullering.
While winning the group would guarantee playing a third-place team yet to be
determined in Vancouver followed by a R16 tie against Colombia or Portugal in the most plausible scenario, coming second would mean taking on the runner up of Group B, one of South Korea, Czech Republic or South Africa, in LA and then probably a R16 match against Netherlands if form follows Fifa rankings in the initial stages of the knockouts.
We will also be keeping an eye on Bosnia vs Qatar from Seattle where a win for either should earn them third place and a decent chance of a place in next week’s R32.
