England beat Panama 2-0 in their last group match of the World Cup in New Jersey on Saturday night to finish top of Group L.
Thomas Tuchel’s team struggled to break down the Central American side before goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane in the second half.

We did what was needed. A tough match as expected against a physical opponent. We were the only team to create this amount of chances and score twice against them.
We had to be very careful with the counter-attacks because they are very strong but we did well with them and deserved to win.

England win but without giving us a glimpse of how they can possibly compete against the better teams with flaws in defence and too easily frustrated going forward, overly reliant on their two world-class players, Kane and Bellingham, just as they were under Southgate in 2022. But they are where they need to be. I can’t see them as viable contenders, though.

Konsa gives it to Spence who zips a pass out to Madueke. The England winger whips a left-foot cross to the back post where Rashford snatches at a volley and drags it into the ground and behind.

Andrade is booked for wiping out Rogers by accident as he was chasing a ball down the inside-right.
Jordan Henderson takes Kane’s armband as he replaces Anderson and Kane goes off for Ollie Watkins. Henderson becomes the first England player to feature at seven major tournaments – Euros in 2012, 2016 and 2020/21, World Cups in 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026. Had he not gone to Saudi he would likely have hit that landmark in Germany two years ago.

Why wasn’t Diaz on earlier. He catches O’Reilly napping to fire a shot that is turned behind for a corner than has a dig when the cross comes in, blazing over from 20 yards.
There is huge relief for England at avoiding second place in this group. While a potential sequence of Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and France looks ominous, the alternative – Portugal in the round of 32, followed by Spain in the last 16 – would be monstrous.

The start of the second half has been really poor. It looked like the players were panicking until they scored. Hopefully that goal will settle everyone down.

He won the corner himself with a great run to the byline then stands at the near post with Gutiérrez’s arms wrapped round his waist. It doesn’t foil him for a moment. Bellingham just extends his left leg to hook it in from six yards with his big toe.

José Rodríguez frightens the life out of the England fans when racing away from Saka and Anderson on the left and eating up the ground with no challenge. Konsa stands there like a statue and lets the winger wrap his instep around a shot that bends around the outside of the post. Pickford goes mad at his centre-halves and rightly so. They refused to engage.

Rashford pounces on O’Reilly’s pass into the centre-circle, gathers the ball and flies off down the left. He has Kane in support but keeps going and flays a shot into the side netting having narrowed the angle with a touch too many.

We just concentrate on our own game. Our guys intended to start the game fast. The stadium was amazing. Felt like a home game. All that energy skewed our game management and opened up to counter-attacks. Then we got more control and started to use our attacking talent. Attacking talent is not enough, we also need synchronicity and rhythm. [In the second half] We use our attacking talent and go for verticality.

The wide players have been a lot better so far. Rashford and Saka have made a difference. They have brought more quality and penetration and should be the first choice from this point on. But Kane’s positioning is a worry. Because he is trying to get on the ball, when he gets into the game he is trying too many Hollywood balls. The set-up needs a rethink to get more from him.
It feels like a goal is coming, but you have to worry about the counter-attacks, too. It will be interesting to see if Tuchel decides to give more protection alongside Anderson in the second half.

That’s 135 minutes against Ghana and Panama without a goal now for England. Tuchel has still only used one of his three strikers at this tournament, too. Come on TT, let’s have a bit of 4-4-f-------2.

Certainly more urgency than the Ghana game but Croatia’s goal against Ghana, which would put them top of the group if both half-time scores are unchanged by the final whistle, means England need ever more urgency to havea smoother path. Tuchel says he fears no one and we all know teams who were awful in the groups – Italy in 1982, Argentina in 2022 – can go on to win it all, they look a level below France, Spain, Portugal and Argentina.

Rashford rises at the back post to head a cross from the right that he almost manages to smuggle into the top corner from an angle but it scrapes the top of the bar.
Tuchel has taken his cap off and put it back on again. Can you take a cap off in anger? I didn’t see him throw it, so maybe his head was just a bit hot. But it’s back on for now as he watches from his seat in the dug-out.

Anderson strides forward to use his instep to have a strike on goal from 25 yards, again straight at the keeper. Moments earlier Martinez fired a diagonal into the England box that seemed to arrowing towards Murillo in a great position but he let the ball slip under his foot.

Now Guehi picks out O’Reilly with a long, floaty pass and he turns his neck to flick a header with the crown of his head but straight to Mosquera.
Tuchel made a tactical tweak in the hydration break, with Bellingham pushing further forwards. He’s effectively got Rogers and Bellingham playing as two 10s behind Kane with Rashford and Saka out wide. That leaves Anderson with a lot of work defensively if Panama break.

England trying to open passing channels to get Saka and Rashford one v one in wide positions. When they have the ball in midfield, O’Reilly moves inside into central midfield, and Quansah stays in position on the right. Gives an option of a ball inside – and then outside to the winger.

Saka and Rashford are going to be the safe-crackers for England tonight. Saka dribbles down the right, accelerating from the 18-yard line to the byline with the ball under control as he leads Gutierrez a slippery dance. But when he tries to cut the ball back to a red shirt Andrade had come too close on the cover to squeeze it past.

England look very wobbly at the back. Too many gaps. They defend the corner OK but then go to sleep and allow Harvey to get into a position from which he could have done better from a throw-in.
Bellingham the most eye-catching England performance so far. He is a wonderful footballer, although you’re never sure what he is going to do next. Not a bad thing but one doubts Tuchel would play him this deep against more accomplished opposition.

The water break disrupts England’s concentration and Panama drive down their left. Quansah, out of position, leaves a space for José Rodríguez to flood into and fire an angled shot at Pickford which he has to tip round the post.
Really impressive so far from Jude Bellingham playing as a No 8, running from deeper in midfield. It feels like this is more his natural position. Plus Morgan Rogers as a No10 is better as he knows how to press from there takes up clever positions.

Bellingham is being given some rough treatment. He’s already been awarded a couple of fans and thinks he should have had at least one more. Panama are desperate not to allow him to run at them.

Panama are defending like demons and England are unable to shift them out of their shape when the ball is on the floor.
Panama are now the only one of the 48 teams at this World Cup not to have scored yet. The desperation to avoid that unenviable distinction could be a factor, and their danger on the counterattack should not be underestimated. They put two past Brazil in a friendly last month.

Quick Panama break which catches Anderson out of position is wrecked by José Rodríguez overrunning the ball about 20 yards out with only Pickford ahead of him. England counter quickly and area awarded a free-kick which Anderson chips right to left to Kane, who had ghosted down the left of the box, and he thumps his volley into Harvey who deflects it behind. It might have come off his wrist but it was pinned to his chest. The corner is another dud.

Saka waltzes in from the right wing when picked out by Bellingham’s curling pass from the left-half position. He’s unstoppable when dribbling so far but then wafts a tepid, swerving shot into Mosquera’s arms at the near post.
Here’s my big prediction. The first hydration break will be greeted by very loud boos when it comes. The fans are getting drenched as there is very little cover at this stadium, so watching the game paused for the players to take on water will be the ultimate p--- take.

England are faced with two tight banks of nine white shirts but they are not afraid tonight to go over the top or hit the flanks with diagonals rather than straight passes which move defenders around and makes them turn.
Marcus Rashford has made a superb start down the left. Almost scored, cutting inside with a shot and then cushioned a long ball forward from Marc Guehi. Looks like he has a point to prove after Thomas Tuchel’s comment about him being more effective from the bench.

Rashford has done more in the first 10 minutes than Anthony Gordon did in an hour on Wednesday. After the corner that came from his shot which ended up with Saka ballooning a volley from the back post, he is played in over the top down the inside-left again, burns past Harvey and whips over a cross that Saka weakly prods at Mosquera.
All very well winning loads of corners but they keep coming to naught. Tuchel said before the final friendly that he was keeping his more innovative corners secret until the knockout. Portugal/Villa’s Austin Macphee has no such qualms. Or many more variations so he’ll never run out.

Panama have started with quite a high defensive line, which is a bit of a surprise. Surely England can use the pace of Rashford and Saka to get in behind it.

England win the ball back and Saka scoots into the box, opens his body and tries to bend a short left-foot pass to Kane but Escobar pounces to knock it away from the England captain.

These weather conditions feel pretty optimum. Warm but with a cooling drizzle that keeps the pitch wet. England didn’t move the ball quickly enough against Ghana in Foxborough. They will surely have learned their lesson this time.
Once again, this will feel like a home game for England. It’s not just the weather, but the stadium must be at least 90 per cent populated by England supporters. It didn’t do England too much good in Boston, but it must be some sort of advantage.

We are very well prepared. We have a strong team on the pitch and are ready to go and put on a show, prove a point and win the match.
I’m always excited about my team because we have a strong squad and the target is to speed up the game because it’s always difficult when you play against 10 men defending. We have some things to improve but we’re ready for it.
You focus too much on individual positions. It’s not like Marcus [comes] in for Anthony and everything is solved. Anthony did well and Marcus did well from the bench. Now it’s a turnaround. Noni did well, now Bukayo gets the chance. We attack on the side with three or four players in units. It’s not all about Marcus and Anthony.
I take care of Declan’s situation. He had a knock. He is ready to play but I manage his minutes a little and he has a yellow card. I want to see how this match plays out, how many duels, how many cards the referee shows and Declan knows that. That’s why Jude goes in the No 8 position and Morgan in the 10.

Tournament football is an emotional rollercoaster. There is not much point saying we should not get too up after a good performance, or too down after a poor. It’s what happens every two years in a major competition.
So it feels like England need to show their quality tonight, just to restore the buzz that followed the Croatia game and give everyone hope they can go far again.
As someone who watched Jarell Quansah come through the Liverpool academy – he played in a team with my son, James – I’m delighted and proud to see him start a World Cup game. That does not disguise the fact it is difficult to understand why he is playing at right-back. That is not his position, and Djed Spence seemed the obvious choice. I can’t get my head around the idea that Spence now appears to be in the squad as a back-up left-back.
Declan Rice has obviously been carrying a knock, so the midfield changes make sense, and Marcus Rashford deserves his chance ahead of Anthony Gordon.
We know we’re through already so the pressure is off tonight. Let’s hope it’s more like the Croatia game than Ghana.

My worry in the last few months in the build-up is bringing in players who can do a few different jobs for you. But when you get into the knockout games you don’t want a jack-of-all-trades, that would be the worry going forwards.

One position I’m qualified to speak on is right-back. If you’d said to me a couple of months ago that Jarell Quansah would be picked at right-back in a major tournament I’d say something had gone badly wrong.
He picked Reece James and Tino Livramento, players who are injury prone. He’s not taken Trent Alexander-Armstrong who is someone, obviously, with world-class quality for reasons we can only imagine. And we’ve got Quansah at right-back.
I saw Quansah at right-back for Liverpool in a Carabao Cup final a couple of years ago and it wasn’t a beautiful sight because he’s more of a centre-back. That’s where we are.
England will win this game and win this group but there’s some turbulence in there.
He’s played right-back twice in two seasons [and not at all last year with Bayer Leverkusen]. He’s not a right-back.
I wonder whether he’s played Quansah at right-back today on the basis he knows Djed Spence will have to play right-back for the rest of the tournament. All his eggs are in one basket.
Spence is the only option [going forward]. Quansah is not an option in the games later at right-back. He thinks he can handle Panama, do a job as Roy says and Spence can come in for the 32.
In a squad of 26 players we shouldn’t really be in a position where we haven’t got a specialist playing irrespective of what happens with the rest. 26 is a huge number. He has brought in numbers 23, 24, 25, 26 who are deemed to be good travellers, who can maybe play in different positions. I would much prefer to have Trent Alexander-Arnold out there today, being honest with you.

The independent channel still seems to be winning popular opinion and my esteemed colleague Des Lynam says it is clearly superior.
Me, I don’t care how beautiful the set is or how good the Stick to Football/Overload panel is. It’s the big match coverage. I think Mowbray/Shearer are infinitely more bearable than Matterface/Dixon and that’s all that counts. Plus, of course, the same adverts over and over and over again. Still, ITV has a nice view.

England were almost assured of a place in the knockout stages after taking four points from two games, but Spain’s 1-0 win over Uruguay mathematically confirmed their spot in the last 32.
Winning Group L is at stake against Panama on Saturday evening, and should they do so they will play one of the eight best third-placed teams in the next round.
This is what a win, a draw and a defeat against Panama would mean for England’s placing in the group, as well as their possible last-32 opponents, who will be either Senegal, Algeria/Austria or DR Congo.

Morgan Rogers has been handed his first World Cup start by England manager Thomas Tuchel.
Including the 23-year-old is one of a number of changes being made by Tuchel for England’s final Group L fixture against Panama.
Rogers’ inclusion is expected to be in his No 10 role. He has been vying with Jude Bellingham for that position but it seems that Tuchel has decided to play them both together.
So far Rogers has made two substitute appearances at the World Cup.
Consideration has also been given by Tuchel to play Rogers on the left but it appears he is set to start in the middle of the three behind captain Harry Kane.
With Reece James out injured Tuchel already has to shuffle his defence while changes are expected in midfield.

They last wore red in a match of meaning at the World Cup for the 2-0 victory over Sweden in the 2018 quarter-final when the goalscorers were… Harry Maguire and Dele Alli. They also wore it for the plate match but who cares about that? Well, Poland apart.

Good evening and welcome to live coverage of England’s final Group L game against Panama from the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Victory for Thomas Tuchel’s side over the nation they beat 6-1 in Nizhny-Novgorod at the 2018 World Cup – featuring Jordan Pickford, Jordan Henderson, John Stones and Harry Kane of the current squad – they will win the group and set up a Round of 32 match on their expected path against a third-placed side, most likely DR Congo or Senegal but possibly also Austria or Algeria.
They were fortunate to escape from Boston without the award of a penalty against them which may have cost them a point from their draw with Ghana, a match in which they created a handful of good chances but found an excellent defence very hard to break down.
When Plan A – using the pace of their wingers to attack down the sides – did not work, they waited too long to change it and while they do not have a playmaker in the 26, they could have gone more direct, sacrificed one of Declan Rice or Elliot Anderson, and chucked on Ollie Watkins or Ivan Toney.
But long before kick-off Tuchel had said they would try to win but a point against such tricky opponents should not be sniffed at and, understandably, he was not prepared to take any risks. Which was fair enough but depended on the ref taking an indulgent view of Ezri Konsa’s foul on Prince Kwabena Adu and, on winning tonight.
If you were bored by Ghana’s tactics, I’m afraid Panama have tightened up considerably in the past eight years and play a well-organised 5-4-1 system under the tutelage of the former Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen.
