Manchester City have their “free soul” and as this Premier League title race tightens, as the pressure might become inhibiting, Rayan Cherki might be the liberating difference.
Contrast his maverick brilliance, his individual spirit, with just how uptight and tense Arsenal feel right now. They certainly have no one like him or, more accurately, no one allowed to play like him.
For 45 minutes, this was an undeniably dull and flat performance by City, lacking in inspiration. It would have been a first half that delighted Liam Rosenior, the Chelsea head coach. If anything, Chelsea provided the greater threat, with Cole Palmer fired up against his former club.
And then Cherki turned it on with two superb assists in six minutes – the second was breathtaking – as City cut the gap at the top, fully exploiting Arsenal’s home defeat by Bournemouth, to six points.
They have a game in hand – seven to go for them – and face Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium next Sunday. What an encounter that promises to be and how fascinating it will be to see how Mikel Arteta approaches it. Will Arsenal go for a draw or try to win?
For the avoidance of any doubt, it is emphatically now game on in the title race. After Jérémy Doku stole the ball away from Moisés Caicedo, who turned into trouble outside his own penalty area to sum up how appallingly Chelsea collapsed, to score City’s third, the chant was clear.
“Are you watching Arsenal?” the gleeful City fans sang. They certainly would have been. Probably through their fingers.
As the celebrations continued, a City fan was caught on camera drinking from an Arsenal-branded water bottle, which he had clearly readied for the occasion. We all get the “bottle” symbolism.
The hunt is on and Arsenal look like increasingly scared prey while City – including the Carabao Cup final win over Arteta’s side – have now beaten them, Liverpool and Chelsea in their last three games at an aggregate of 9-0.
The scale of this victory also cut Arsenal’s goal-difference advantage at the top to three, and that could be a factor come the end of this campaign. Tellingly, the City players went for more goals right to the end.
Modern football is slated for stamping out the nonconformist player and Pep Guardiola should be credited for giving Cherki his head.
Contrast that to Arteta’s far more rigid, controlled approach, which, of course, may still win the day. But we want to see a bit more and for Arsenal, Eberechi Eze should be their Cherki. However, he is simply not allowed that licence.
Maybe Guardiola has also learnt because he did not allow Jack Grealish the autonomy under which Cherki operates. To counter that, he may argue that Cherki has delivered quite quickly the decisive interventions that Grealish sometimes struggled to achieve and is working harder than he did.
“I don’t feel the pressure. I just want to play with my team-mates, give the pleasure [to the fans], give the good passes... for all the players because we need the goals,” Cherki later said and how sweet that is to hear. Heck, he even plays with a smile.
The manager had also described Cherki as the “free soul”, as he lauded his exceptional skills, and how appropriate it felt as the 22-year-old French international led them.
For the first goal, he teased and delayed, then delivered a cross so inviting from the right corner of the box that it made it easy for Nico O’Reilly to head home from just inside the six-yard area. Worryingly, though, O’Reilly soon went off injured.
The second was a thing of absolute beauty as he collected possession from a short corner on the left, ran across the face of the Chelsea area, evading two challenges and executed a stunning no-look pass to Marc Guéhi, who finished low into the far corner like Erling Haaland.
“Rayan has something special,” Guardiola said. “The second goal? I couldn’t even see the pass.” And that is a rare tribute coming from Guardiola.
Those two goals meant that Cherki became the first player to reach at least 10 assists in his debut season in the Premier League since countryman – and fellow maverick – Dimitri Payet 10 years ago.
Former City full-back Gaël Clichy – who worked with Cherki as Thierry Henry’s assistant for the French Under-21s – said he expected him to “reach Kevin De Bruyne’s numbers”. That is some compliment and some excitement for City if they can replace arguably their greatest player.
After the goals? Cherki could not help himself. He flicked the ball up, juggled it before volleying it down the right wing for Antoine Semenyo. This time, there was no shake of the head from Guardiola, as there was at Wembley, who later substituted Cherki after 76 minutes. The game was won and such is the playmaker’s importance in this run-in that he may as well have been taken off.
“We’ll fight to the end, we’re Man City, we’ll fight to the end,” the visiting supporters sang. That bit of Cherki flair is making the fight even more winnable.
Doku: City can land ‘big punch’ in Arsenal title-decider and seal own fate
Jérémy Doku, the Manchester City winger, has billed next Sunday’s blockbuster Premier League meeting with Arsenal a title decider and backed his side to deliver a “big punch” by winning.
After scoring City’s third goal in their impressive 3-0 win away to Chelsea, Doku was asked whether the fixture against Arsenal would now be a title decider. “Yeah, I would say it is,” he agreed. “If you win this game, it’s a big punch towards them. If you lose this game, it’s in their hands.
“If we win, it’s in our hands, and I prefer to have it in our hands... I believe the race is on. We have a big game now; we’re going to recover well and look forward to it.”
The language used by Doku was similar – deliberately or inadvertently – to the line from Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, after the 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth on Saturday that blew open the fight to be champions. Arteta called the result, which allowed City to cut the lead at the top to just six points and, with a game in hand, a “big punch in the face”.
Doku added: “I watched the Arsenal game and when I saw them lose, I saw that the Premier League is really unpredictable. We were also focused on our own game. Winning here is not a given, so that we did it is exceptional.”
A relaxed Pep Guardiola – who joked that no one would even have bet £1 that City would beat Arsenal in the recent Carabao Cup final, which they won – was more cautious, even if he described next Sunday’s game as another “final”.
“I would like to say to my fans: respect Arsenal a lot, they are an extraordinary team. Come to join us from minute one because the players will do the maximum,” he said.
“They have been the best team in this country, in Europe, so far. Beating Arsenal once is so difficult, imagine beating them twice in a few weeks? We’ll adjust from the Carabao Cup final and what we have to do with our people to perform well.”
Of that final, which City won 2-0, possibly delivering a psychological blow to Arsenal, Guardiola claimed: “Is there one person in this room [who] bet for us in the Carabao Cup final? £1? Not even one bet for us. We were underdogs and that was perfect. Now it’s different and that is a mindset we have to work [with]. We and our fans have to respect Arsenal and the team they have created in the last two or three years.
“Football is like that, you can win 49 games, lose three in the last four, this is the business. You pretend they are in control, but I talk from myself and know how difficult [it is]. The warnings have to be there. We have got a long week and we have to train good and prepare good and it will be difficult. I know the manager perfectly and how good he is at adjusting things.
“We play at home with our people, the people are proud of us again after what we have delivered the last decade. Of course Arsenal is a final for us – for them as well but for us.”
Guardiola added: “Winning helps, and winning the Carabao Cup against the best team so far of course helped. It proved to us that we can compete against them, before that apparently it didn’t look like [it].”
With the momentum again in their favour, Guardiola was reminded that City have lost just one of their last 43 matches during previous run-ins to seasons under him.
Asked why, he declared: “The sun. I’m not joking. The sun. In Manchester, there is never the sun. If the sun arrived in November, we would be champions in January. Honestly, the mood is better. The mentality of the group.”

“I am always happy when you win way at stadiums at Stamford Bridge. The fans are happy, we are happier.
“Second half was was much better - it was not bad first half, but some players were not as they needed to be. We attacked a bit left side, but right side we attacked without threat. Second half was better on both sides.”
When asked about Rayan Cherki, he replied:
“Rayan is an extraordinary talent - the second goal, the pass to Marc [Guehi]. The problem for Rayan is sometimes he plays in positions too close to Donnarumma, your talent has to be in the final third. Be close to Haaland, close to wingers.
“We will bring the ball to you. It’s not necessary to come down [the pitch]. He is so young, his impact in Premier League in first season... he is already an extraordinary player. He has the desire to be even better. That will be good for City and him.”

Guehi spent over a decade of his career at Chelsea, mostly in the academy before a brief spell with the first team. However, he failed to nail down a place in the senior squad, and after a successful loan spell with Swansea City, he joined Crystal Palace in 2021.
At Selhurst Park, Guehi emerged into one of the Premier League’s most consistent and talented centre-backs. This earned the defender a deserved move to Man City, where he has settled in brilliantly.

Since then, the 25-year-old has held peace talks and apologised to the club for his actions, according to his agent Javier Pastore.
Liam Rosenior has stood firm by his punishment, and Chelsea will be without their vice-captain, who would have undoubtedly played if he was available.
