The White Isle is well known for its bohemian roots, crystalline coves and restorative scenery, along with its reputation as a hedonistic hangout. As such, there are some seriously stylish places to stay, from working farmhouses where bountiful produce is picked just in time for dinner and chilled-out escapes once graced by legends such as Grace Jones, to slow-paced spa gems and rustic fincas.

Some of the hotels listed below are already well known, while others are insider secrets. All of them are recommended for their down-to-earth and thoughtful service, their characterful interiors where carefully considered details draw the eye and their authentic atmospheres. So, if you're looking to choose a place packed with personality, here's our pick of the very best boutique hotels in Ibiza

How we review

All our reviewers are either resident destination experts or travel writers that specialise in hotels. Often they will have stayed at a hotel many times and so can see how it has changed for better or worse over the years. They know what makes a great hotel in that particular destination and will compare it contextually against local competition. When our reviewers first visit a hotel, they stay for at least one night, eat one meal in addition to breakfast and will experience all of the facilities on offer. Whichever category of room they stay in, they will see the entry-level rooms in order to assess them.

After their stay, our reviewers then give the hotel six scores out of 10, rating its location, style and character, service and facilities, rooms, food and drink, and value for money. The average of these scores then determines the overall score. Our experts then select reviews for curated lists like this – the best hotels in a particular destination for families, for instance – together with the Telegraph Hotels team.

Montesol Experimental sits smack bang in the heart of Ibiza Town, with sweeping views of Vara de Rey down below, and the fortress-like walls of Dalt Vila up above. The 33 sunshine-filled bedrooms feature walls embossed with seashell shapes, shiny walnut mirrors and embroidered headboards. Other playful touches include asymmetric wardrobe doors that fit together like jigsaw pieces to brass sun and moon motifs. There are two restaurants with adjoining bars. Café Montesol is set on the ground floor and spills out onto the square outside, making it a pleasant place to watch the world go by with a coffee or a cocktail. The Rooftop Bar has a tiled floor the colour of blood orange, and acts as a great viewing platform for the fortified walls of Dalt Vila – few places offer a better perspective of it.

Pure House is an archetypal Ibiza bolthole, with bountiful gardens, boho-inspired design and a gloriously laid-back atmosphere. This intimate forest finca is only a short drive from Ibiza Town, yet it's totally immersed in nature, offering escapism in spades. The low-key, stylish interiors are intimate and beautifully curated, casting you away to otherworldly lands and evoking the essence of White Isle bohemia, with subtle ethnic touches such as woven lampshades, Ikat pillows and plenty of bamboo thatching. Everything comes together to create a decidedly easygoing vibe.

The best beach hotels in Ibiza

The quirky but cool Los Enamorados, set in the idyllic fishing cove of Portinatx, leads onto a small but charming sandy bay, with views out to sea in one direction and towards the iconic striped lighthouse in the other. Compelling interiors are down to the vivid imaginations of its founders, Pierre Traversier, a former basketball player, and Rozemarijn de Witte, a journalist and editor. Think vivid, earthy tones accentuated by modernist armchairs in one corner, striking Balinese statues in another, and treasures collected from around the globe. The nine rooms are also awash with little details and textures, as well as beach bags, towels and snorkels. The restaurant and bar lead onto an al fresco terrace overlooking the sea that’s ideal day and night.

The best five-star hotels in Ibiza

Ses Pitreras is a really great hotel, tucked away in San Agustín. It has a grown up feel and hot tubs in every room, making it the perfect bolthole for couples. The location is also superb for catching Ibiza’s famous sunset, and a great base for exploring the nearby beaches, which include some of the island’s best. Décor-wise, they dare to do things differently at Ses Pitreras and it really works in their favour, becoming the kind of rare Ibiza hotel that boasts its own unique style. Each of the seven rooms is decorated differently but bound by a few key points – walls and furnishings in shades of grey, white and fawn, plush carpets underfoot that beg to be rolled on, and the comfy king-sized beds adorned in 100 per cent Ibicenco cotton.

The best hotels in Ibiza Town

Time and space is served up in spades at Ca Na Xica, a gem of a hotel hidden among the Ibizan countryside where days pass in a blissed out haze thanks to the beautiful setting, excellent pampering facilities and standout restaurant which is a destination in its own right. Known throughout Ibiza for its superb, plant-focused menu, every course is delivered with a detailed description from the wait staff, with particularly memorable dishes including grilled leeks with cured Mahón cheese, marinated carrot with yeast sauce, mirin, soy and passion fruit crisp, and a particularly good grilled cabbage with tahini, paprika and dill oil.

The best luxury hotels in Ibiza

What was once a basic family hotel on the side of the road to Santa Eularia has been stylishly converted into a boutique property with plenty of charm and even more personality. The best part? The spectacularly charismatic hosts. Staying here feels a bit like visiting a couple of your oldest, dearest friends. After buying the hotel and relocating to Ibiza from Vienna (though they both still travel to Austria for work), they set to work bringing character and a bit of spark back to the finca. Woven Moroccan baskets on cast iron shelves and massive sunbeds with pink, marble-print covers line the pool, and there are plants everywhere. The grounds are also worth exploring: there are nooks and crannies dotted around, including a small, Japanese-inspired pond and garden.

Situated in San Carlos – one of Ibiza’s most bohemian villages with a spirit rooted in the 1960s – this hotel’s countryside location means it’s encompassed by an abundance of sensational flora. The original Can Curreu finca is more than 200 years old, and a real emphasis has been placed on maintaining the hotel’s authentic, rustic style as it has expanded over the years – each suite has modern features but is drenched in traditional charm. The surrounding gardens are intoxicating and the swimming pool has plenty of beds and excellent views across the green valley below. On-site stables mean budding equestrians can explore the surrounding fields on horseback, which is surely as idyllic as it gets.

The best hotels in Andalucia

Fig and almond trees scent the air at this rural haven in the Santa Agnés valley. It was built as a farmhouse in 1652 and has been lovingly maintained by the same family since 1997. Each of the 15 rooms is different and has its own terrace, garden or balcony; the dining area and its traditional farmhouse tables are the picture of country chic; while the pool has a slightly more contemporary – but still bohemian– feel. Staff are relaxed and eager to please, though never intrusive, which suits the hotel’s private retreat vibe. On scorching days, the staff deliver complimentary ice-cold juice direct to your sun lounger, and along with a small spa, there's a well-curated boutique and a covered outdoor studio perfect for private yoga and meditation sittings.

The best beach hotels in spain

Once the family home of the British comedian and actor Terry Thomas, Can Talaias is now an unpretentious boutique hotel run by his youngest son Cushan and his wife Laetitia. Its friendly, casual vibe nods to its history as an ordinary (albeit beautiful) family home, while its standout terrace is anything but. There are eight rooms at Can Talaias; the hero being, most certainly, the circular Terry Thomas suite on the ground floor. The Girasol suite is also airy and bright and suitable for families, and there are a number of other superior suites, some with terraces or a garden, and all with well-sized, immaculate bathrooms. They feel comfortable and relaxed, with cream, yellow or terracotta-hued walls and bed linens that are crisp yet homely.

The 30 greatest hotels in Spain

Hotel Xereca is a hidden gem for those in the know. It’s designed to look and feel both chilled out and well groomed, and draws those seeking a rustic escape – yet with ultra-attractive surroundings and the convenience of a central location. Orange and olive trees dot the property and the hotel blends into the Ibizan countryside, with its Bedouin tent-covered outdoor lounge, sprawling grounds, mix of light stone and time-washed terracotta and curved, sculptural accents. But the true stand-out feature is the 15th-century watermill, an icon of rural Spain that today, feels perfectly at home next to the teal infinity pool.

The best budget hotels in Ibiza

This diminutive boutique hotel lies in the sleepy village of San Juan, a laid-back spot in the north of Ibiza. The property offers a relaxed, intimate experience and atmosphere in its five suites, characterised by exceptional bespoke service – which is actually a rarity in Ibiza, so enjoy it while you can. The décor is mostly neutral with occasional flashes of the exotic. Think pebbled floors and walls, decorative bamboo flourishes and chunky wooden furnishings with pops of colourful art on the walls, all artfully curated. Bathrooms are spa-like with standalone bathtubs, carved stone sinks, double showers and complimentary Mid/Night toiletries.

The best hotels in Formentera

Everything is on point at Casa Maca – from the smart interiors and great service to the excellent food and impressive views. Few Ibiza hotels are as thoughtfully curated as this; use this 300-year-old farmhouse and its chic outbuildings as a base for slipping into a distinctly Balearic state of mind. The picture perfect pool boasts panoramic views of Dalt Vila, Ibiza town’s Medieval hilltop fortress, and the surrounding countryside. Lined by plush day beds and stylish black parasols with white fringing, the best part is that it never feels overcrowded and has a chilled vibe that favours sun-warmed snoozes over rowdy fiestas – in other words, you can recover from the night before in relative peace, or turn up the dial for the night ahead, mood dependent.
