Post-match thoughts of Bayern boss Vincent Kompany
Link copied to clipboard
“First of all we are happy with what we have got. We are looking forward to next week. I see no reason why we should not go into next week with full belief. Towards the end, in the last five minutes, I did shut up shop! He [Manuel Neuer] makes it look so easy. I have not thought too much about what has happened in the past. The most important thing is to continue our momentum. They are going to give us a tough game and they are the type of team who can do something special so we respect them.”

Bayern will be happy to have won in Madrid tonight but there will be a sense of what could have been for Vincent Kompany’s side, who could really have killed off the tie tonight. They will still head home with a one-goal advantage going into the second leg at home but another goal may well have virtually put them into the semi-finals.

There is the final whistle and Bayern will take a one-goal lead into the second leg in Munich next week. It could have been worse for Real, who could have faced a bigger deficit going to Germany for the second leg.

Olise goes down wanting a penalty, believing he was pushed in the back by Carreras, but Michael Oliver waves those appeals away. It was clumsy by Carreras but it is no penalty. That could so easily have been given.

Bayern spurn a massive opportunity to take a two-goal advantage into the second leg. They counter at pace and Diaz drives towards the Real box. He has a fairly simple pass on to Olise, who surely would have scored if the pass had been good, but the pass is overhit.

Mbappe drives towards the Bayern box and has the space to get his shot away but his curling effort goes wide. Neuer had no chance of getting across but the shot was not on target.

That is a crucial block from Militao as he intercepts Pavlovic’s cross. Had Militao not blocked that, Diaz would have had a tap-in at the back post.

Musiala slides in and is booked for a foul on Diaz. He had tried to go for the ball but ended up taking Diaz down. It was not the malicious foul the Real players portrayed it was but Musiala is into the book.

The momentum has quickly shifted in Real’s favour and they now have a free-kick just outside the Bayern box after Vinicius Jr was tripped by Diaz, who is booked.
Alexander-Arnold’s delivery is headed over by Kane for a Real corner. Bayern clear their lines.
GOAL! Mbappe gets goal back for Real after sensational Alexander-Arnold assist
Link copied to clipboard
The home side have been poor tonight but that could be an important goal in this tie. It is all about Alexander-Arnold and the assist, which is quite incredible. Valverde plays the ball forward to pick out the run of Alexander-Arnold. On the right side of the box, the former Liverpool right-back plays a quite sensational ball driven along the floor all the way to the back post, where Mbappe finishes. Despite Neuer’s best efforts, the ball did cross the line and the goal is given. Mbappe looked hidden at the far post and the ball did not look on but somehow Alexander-Arnold picked out Mbappe with one of the best balls you will see. What will Thomas Tuchel, in attendance in Madrid tonight, think of that?

Mbappe has another chance but is still unable to get on the scoresheet tonight. Vinicius Jr finds Mbappe on the overlapping run but the Frenchman cannot find the far corner, curling just wide of the far corner. There have been chances galore tonight for both sides.

Real should get a goal back but Vinicius Jr misses a massive chance. A long ball is played forward but Upamecano makes a huge error, presenting a one-on-one chance for Vinicius Jr. He tries to go around Neuer but his effort hits the side netting. That miss is met with a pretty hostile reaction from the home fans.

It is safe to say there is plenty of anger and frustration from the home fans, who are not impressed one bit with their side’s performance thus far. Real need changes and they need them now, or else this tie will be done by the end of the night.

That would have been a fine goal from Olise. The Frenchman is having a field day against Carreras and it is like he has the left-back on a string. Olise receives it on the right touchline and skips past Carreras with ease once again. He drives inside and gets his shot away from just outside the box but Lunin makes the save.

GOAL! Kane doubles Bayern’s advantage

The dream start to the second half for Bayern, a nightmare one for Real. That goal perfectly sums up the night as Real give the ball away and Bayern punish them. Carreras, the left-back, dithers on the ball on halfway and Bayern counter. Olise cuts inside from the right and lays it across the face of the penalty area to Kane, who hits it first time and curls one into the bottom corner. Kane’s fine season continues. That goal came not even 30 seconds into the second half.

Vinicius Jr throws himself to the ground and wins a free-kick on the edge of the Bayern box. Stanisic did stick his leg out but it was a rather theatrical reaction from Vinicius Jr.
Alexander-Arnold blasts it in but his compatriot Kane heads it away. That ball was travelling.
GOAL! Diaz puts Bayern ahead
Link copied to clipboard
The Colombian slots home but will this stand? Gnabry slides a delicate pass through into the path of Diaz, who gets the better of Alexander-Arnold, who does not track the run. Diaz opens up his body and first time slots past Lunin with a clinical finish. There were appeals for handball against Olise in the build-up but that is never going to happen. Diaz was also onside and the goal will stand. You have to say that Bayern deserve that goal.

Twice in two minutes Real should be punished for utter stupidity. Lunin plays a ridiculous pass to Pitarch on the edge of the box and the youngster is under huge pressure. His attempted pass back to Lunin is terrible and goes straight to Gnabry, who should score but hits his effort straight at Lunin.

Bayern should punish Real. Alexander-Arnold inexplicably gives the ball away deep inside his own half with a ridiculous pass but Olise’s pass into Gnabry inside the Real box is too heavy.

A few nervy moments for Neuer, as he just about catches a deflected Vinicius Jr cross on his own line before giving away possession. Alexander-Arnold steals it for Real but his shot from the right side of the box is blocked.

There are occasions when you watch Real Madrid in the Champions League and it feels like a weird footballing experiment: eleven class players assembled with no particular formation, system, playing philosophy or well-prepared passing patterns, in the expectation that someone will eventually produce a match-defining goal or assist. This game has started in a similar fashion.

Real counter as Mbappe swiftly drives through the Bayern half. The Frenchman attracts numerous Bayern defenders and then finds Vincius Jr in space to his left. He finds the Brazilian, who cuts inside onto his right and shoots from the edge of the box. His curling effort towards the far corner is saved well by Neuer down to his left.

Bayern should be ahead as Upamecano misses an absolute sitter! Kimmich clips a lovely cross to the back post, which finds Kane, who unselfishly lays it across the six-yard box to Upamecano. The French defender should score every day of the week but he scuffs his effort, allowing Carreras to clear on his own line. Upamecano is probably one of the last Bayern players they would have wanted on the end of that and it is a huge let-off for Real.
8 mins: Real Madrid 0 Bayern Munich 0

Olise takes and there is a crucial touch from Huijsen’s head to take the free-kick over the bar for a Bayern corner. Olise sends it into a dangerous area and once more Huijsen gets his head on it to put it behind for another corner, this time on the other side. Kimmich will take this one and nearly catches Lunin out but the Real keeper tips the inswinger over the bar as it threatened to creep in.
Lunin is unconvincing again as he fails to deal with Kimmich’s latest delivery, which results in a mad scramble in the Real box. There are appeals for handball against Valverde, who blocked Gnabry’s acrobatic effort, but Valverde’s arm was tucked into his body.
5 mins: Real Madrid 0 Bayern Munich 0

Olise shows great footwork to drive inside from the right touchline and move towards the Real box. Huijsen then brings Olise down and it is an obvious free-kick, despite some Real protestations. This is a great position for Olise, the man who won the free-kick, to get his left foot on it...

The first chance of the night falls to the visitors inside the opening minute and Laimer should really do much better. Heavyweight tussle in Madrid

The Champions League quarter-finals kicks off with a mouthwatering contest in Madrid as 15-time winners Real Madrid host six-time winners Bayern Munich in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu. Both these sides fell at this stage of the competition last season, with Real losing 5-1 on aggregate to Arsenal and Bayern Munich being defeated 4-3 on aggregate by Inter Milan. This will be the 29th meeting between the clubs and is the most-played fixture in major European competition history. Real have come out on top 13 times in the previous 28 meetings, with Bayern taking 11 wins. These sides last met in the semi-finals of the 2023/24 season, with Real Madrid progressing to the final after winning 4-3 on aggregate, which they won 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund.
Real booked their place in the quarter-finals after overcoming Manchester City in the last 16. They managed to do most of the damage in the first leg, winning 3-0 at home, before completing the job by winning 2-1 in Manchester to progress 5-1 on aggregate. Their La Liga hopes though were dealt a blow on Saturday as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at Mallorca to leave them seven points behind Barcelona.
The hosts will be without Thibaut Courtois and Rodrygo whilst Ferland Mendy and Dani Ceballos are doubts.
Bayern Munich made light work of the Champions League last 16, thrashing Atalanta across both legs. They claimed a 6-1 win over in Italy in the first leg before winning 4-1 at home to progress 10-2 on aggregate. They come into tonight’s first leg of the back of a stunning comeback in the Bundesliga on Saturday; they were 2-0 down at Freiburg with 10 minutes of normal time remaining but a double from Tom Bischof and a 99th-minute winner from Lennart Karl led the Bundesliga leaders to victory.
That win means they are now 13 games unbeaten in all competitions, with their last defeat coming against Augsburg back in late January. Vincent Kompany’s side are cruising towards the Bundesliga title as they are nine points clear of Borussia Dortmund with just six games remaining. As they hold a commanding lead at the top of the Bundesliga, Kompany was able to rest a number of key players in that win at Freiburg, with Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies on the bench.
Harry Kane, who missed the win over Freiburg due to ankle injury that forced him to also miss England’s recent defeat to Japan during the international break, could return for the visitors tonight. He took part in training in Munich on Monday and has travelled with the squad to Madrid.
Team news to follow shortly.
