Tottenham’s wretched run of form at Stamford Bridge continues as Chelsea claim a 2-1 victory over Spurs. Goals from Fernandez and Andrey Santos powered the hosts into a 2-0 lead, before Richarlison’s strike set up a nervy end to the game. The visitors couldn’t find an equaliser and this result lifts Chelsea up to eighth, just a point behind Brighton in seventh. Meanwhile, Spurs stay 17th, two points ahead of 18th-place West Ham. As long as Spurs avoid defeat on the last day at home to Everton then they will stay up. West Ham have to beat Leeds if they stand any chance of retaining their top-flight status.

There’s some commotion inside the penalty area as Spurs prepare to take a corner, with Cucurella hauling Van de Ven to the floor. Both sets of players surround the referee. It’s very hard to work out what’s going on in such a crowded six-yard box. Cucurella is booked but the offence occurred before the whistle was blown for the corner, so Spurs are denied a penalty.
Chelsea eventually clear the second corner, and Delap collides with Spence as the home side attempt to get forward. The striker is booked for his troubles.
Such a lack of skill from Liam Delap. An experienced forward uses his body, not his elbow. Missed a chance to punish Spurs who had committed men forward in search of an equaliser.

Richarlison and Maddison combine, allowing the English playmaker to advance into Chelsea’s penalty area. From close range he shoots, but Hato comes across to make a goal-saving tackle to block Maddison’s effort.
That Jorrel Hato last-ditch tackle on Maddison was good, it drew applause from both sets of benches.

Hato gets into deep conversation with the referee and needlessly picks up a yellow card, with Chelsea beginning to look a little apprehensive.
Having spoken about the brilliant atmosphere in the first half, that Richarlison goal has brought a level of nervousness that wasn’t present before. The home fans have just booed Neto, who tried to pass back instead of moving into a goalscoring position with the ball.

Chelsea are caught in short numbers at the back and Tel threads a pass through to Porro, who tees up Sarr. The substitute tries a back heel and gets the execution completely wrong, but the ball trickles into Richarlison’s path and the striker slams it into the net.

De Zerbi was about to give his final instructions and ring the changes before the second goal went in from Andrey Santos. He just turned away and sank into his seat. Tottenham have faded badly in this second half.

Chelsea have barely ventured forward in this second half, but in the blink of an eye, they’re 2-0 ahead. Neto clips a deep cross into the box. Fernandez then classily directs a first-time pass through Van de Ven’s legs towards Andrey Santos, who applies a simple close-range finish by sliding the ball into the bottom corner. That is the Brazilian’s first Premier League goal and it puts Chelsea in control. Agony for Tottenham, who were preparing a triple change. They have to go for it now.

Chelsea are sinking deeper and are inviting pressure from Spurs. However, the visitors aren’t taking full advantage. They’re lacking purpose in their attacking play. It’s not exactly been inspiring football from a Chelsea perspective either.
The game has gone into a stop-start mode and, in his bid to keep all the players focused, Enzo Fernandez is waving his hands to demand more, more, more. He also made eye contact with MacFarlane to urge him on: more, more, more.

Tel beats Cucurella with ease and whips a menacing cross into the box to find Richarlison. The unmarked striker heads wide from a presentable position. He will be very relieved to see the offside flag go up.
After that horrible miss from Richarlison, Roberto De Zerbi turned away in frustration, bent his head down to take water from the ice box and yelled out his frustration into it.

Spurs pressure forces a mistake from Andrey Santos, who passes the ball out for a throw-in. It looks like Danso is ready for a long throw, but he goes short to Udogie. The full-back overhits a cross into the box and Chelsea now have a throw-in. That is so poor from Udogie.

As it stands, the Premier League relegation battle will go to the final day of the season, with Chelsea leading Tottenham 1-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to Fernandez’s opener. The visitors started well and hit the post through Tel’s header. However, Chelsea grew into the contest and broke the deadlock through Fernandez’s long-range effort. The Chelsea captain then struck the bar with a whipped free kick. Spurs have struggled to create chances and there is work to do for De Zerbi’s men. Meanwhile, a win for Chelsea would lift them up to eighth and back in contention for Europa League qualification.

Palhinha loses the ball cheaply in midfield and Bentancur’s tackle is far too weak. This allows the ball to break to Palmer, who drags a low effort wide from outside the area.

Neto launches the free kick into the box, and under serious pressure, Kinsky does very well to catch it without falling into his goal.
Antonin Kinsky has been a one-man army for Spurs since he came into the team under De Zerbi. He’s just drawn applause from Bruno Saltor and James Maddison after impressively catching a cross under huge pressure from the Chelsea forwards.

Chelsea strike the bar! Porro is shown a yellow card after his sliding challenge brings Cucurella down, gifting Chelsea a free kick in a dangerous position. Fernandez takes it and whips a venomous strike against the bar. That was a magnificent effort and the Chelsea captain is so close to a second goal.

Chelsea burst forward and the move ends with Cucurella firing a cross into Delap. The striker swivels and shoots, but his effort is comfortably off target.
Liam Delap is looking for only his second league goal of the season and has been given a rare opportunity to start in place of Joao Pedro. It was refreshing to see both Levi Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo applaud his wayward shot from the bench. That will give him confidence.

Palmer dribbles down the right hand side and feeds Neto. The winger darts inside and passes to Fernandez. From an incredibly long distance, the Chelsea captain bends a powerful strike into the net. It looks like Kinsky could have done better. It’s not the goalkeeper’s finest moment. The goal is slightly against the run of play, but Chelsea won’t care. Is it a brilliant strike or a goalkeeping error?
Feels on a few replays that Kinsky should have done better. Fernandez was a long way out and it was not an unsaveable clout of the ball.

Chelsea come forward and Hato finds himself incredibly high up the pitch. The defender tees up Palmer, who bends a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area that forces Kinsky into a diving save. Palmer has undoubtedly been Chelsea’s brightest spark in these opening stages.

Off the post for Spurs! Porro clips a teasing cross towards the back post. It finds Tel, who sneaks in between two Chelsea defenders, but his diving header agonisingly hits the post. It’s another encouraging sign for the visitors.

Porro and Kolo Muani play a slick one-two to easily bypass Cucurella. The Frenchman drives forward, but his cross is headed away by Fofana. Spurs have made a positive start.

Palmer does well to win a free-kick against Palhinha to relieve some of the pressure on the home side. Without Joao Pedro, there will be high expectations on Palmer to deliver this evening for Chelsea.

Levi Colwill is also here in a hoodie but not in the team. The reason I’ve been told is load management, and that he’s not ready to play 90 minutes in three games in a week. He played 90 against City at Wembley the other day and will likely be in the team at the weekend against Sunderland.

Conor Gallagher joined Chelsea at the age of six and spent nearly 20 years at Stamford Bridge, before leaving for Atletico Madrid in 2024. The midfielder signed for Tottenham in January and it will be very interesting to see what type of reception he receives this evening. Other former Chelsea stars Mason Mount and Kai Havertz have both received quite hostile welcomes on their returns to West London.

It has been far too easy for players to find excuses at Chelsea. The coach is not good enough, he’s too inexperienced, he hasn’t won anything, he’s too nice. The appointment of Xabi Alonso has stripped all of those away.
The Chelsea owners have stopped experimenting and have killed the culture of excuses that has strangled the club during the BlueCo era by turning to a man of Alonso’s pedigree and giving him the title of manager.
Each of Alonso’s predecessors during the BlueCo ownership was called “head coach”. Making the Spaniard their first manager is recognition of his seniority within the set-up and a clear message to the players that he is in charge.
