The records tumbled in Mullanpur on Wednesday night as Rajasthan Royals opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi set the stage alight with a sensational 29-ball 97 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.

Sooryavanshi was one hit away from breaking Chris Gayle’s 30 ball record for the fastest ever IPL century but as things panned out, the teenager holed out to deep third while attempting to go for a six.

Gayle’s record for the fastest century might not have been broken, but there were numerous other landmarks that Sooryavanshi breached during his whirlwind innings.

Most sixes by a player in a single IPL season

Sooryavanshi fell short of Gayle’s fastest century record but broke the West Indian’s record for the most sixes hit by a player in a single season. Gayle, until today, held the record when he hit 59 sixes in the 2013 season while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. But Sooryavanshi’s 12 sixes today lifted him past Gayle, moving him to 65 sixes for the season.

Joint fastest half-century in IPL Playoffs

Sooryavanshi brought his half-century in 16 deliveries today, which is the joint fastest fifty in IPL playoffs. The RR opener now shares the record with Suresh Raina, who also scored a 16-ball fifty for Chennai Super Kings against Kings XI Punjab in 2014.

Youngest half-centurion in IPL Playoffs

Sooryavanshi, at the tender age of just 16, also became the youngest half-centurion in the IPL Playoffs. The previous youngest was Prithvi Shaw, who scored a half century for Delhi Capitals against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2019.

Most sixes hit in an innings in IPL Playoffs

Sooryavanshi’s dozen maximums against SRH is also the most sixes hit by a batter in an innings in IPL Playoffs. The record was previously held by Shubman Gill, who hit 10 sixes for Gujarat Titans against Mumbai Indians in 2023.

Joint-most sixes hit by an Indian in an IPL innings

Sooryavanshi’s 12 sixes is also the joint most by an Indian in an IPL innings, equalling his own record against the same opposition earlier in the season.
