Nearly two months ago, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad got this IPL season underway, carrying expectation, intrigue, and vastly different burdens. The former arrived as the defending champion, desperate to prove its triumph was no fleeting moment; the latter entered with the weight of unrealised promise, intent on finally turning potential into authority.

With the tournament in its business end, the two sides meet again, this time at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Friday. The experiments are over, and the narratives have been established. RCB, having gone about its business with almost ruthless efficiency, stands on the brink of sealing top spot, while SRH senses an opportunity for a top-two finish.

Sunrisers will look to challenge the visitors with a markedly different bowling attack from the one fielded at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where Jaydev Unadkat and Harshal Patel spearheaded the unit in skipper Pat Cummins’ absence.

Eshan Malinga has since emerged as the side’s talisman with 17 wickets, while Sakib Hussain (14) and Praful Hinge (11) have provided impressive support before Cummins returned to the side. The Australian has added sharpness and intensity, claiming eight wickets in just six appearances. This bowling unit will be SRH’s first line of attack against an RCB side that appears to possess few, if any, vulnerabilities.

Rajat Patidar’s side, too, boasts a formidable bowling attack. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, a former SRH man for 11 seasons, leads the wickets tally with 24 scalps in 13 matches. He has been ably supported by Josh Hazlewood (12 in 10), Rasikh Salam (12 in 9), and Krunal Pandya (10 in 13).

With the bat, Virat Kohli had led the way (542 runs in 13 matches). Devdutt Padikkal (412 in 13) and Patidar (337 in 12) have also played key roles, while Tim David and Phil Salt have added firepower lower down.

While the openers are SRH’s trump cards, Heinrich Klaasen leads the run charts for the side with 555 runs in 13 innings, while Abhishek Sharma (507 in 13) and Ishan Kishan (490 in 13) have been equally influential. Travis Head (367 in 13) is in the middle of a quieter-than-usual season, but is still capable of turning a match on its head in a matter of overs, as Mumbai Indians discovered earlier this month.

Two batting powerhouses. Two confident bowling units. Two teams with playoff spots already secured. If their first meeting set the tone for the season, this one could provide the perfect crescendo before the playoffs.
