In an effort towards increasing the State’s renewable energy generation, the Tamil Nadu government has announced  the setting up of five renewable energy zones. 

According to a Power Ministry statement, the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) is undertaking significant administrative restructuring, and the government has set up renewable energy zones with headquarters at Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Madurai. 

The statement added that these zones will coordinate wind and solar projects, and the administration, monitoring and execution of renewable energy projects. They will also take care of implementing battery energy storage system projects, and various other solar energy projects such as PM-Kusum, PM rooftop solar, and other projects.  

The government has also announced the dissolution and restructuring of the existing administrative set-up of the Non-Conventional Energy Sources (NCES) offices in Udumalpet and Tirunelveli.

Through this restructuring, the government intends to accelerate approvals for new renewable energy projects, repowering existing projects, conducting technical studies and providing investors transparent single-window services, the DIPR statement added.
