Chennai, May 11 The young brigade of MLAs from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) brought a noticeably energetic atmosphere to the opening day of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Ahead of the start of the session, several first-time legislators were seen taking selfies, making video calls, and chatting excitedly on their phones.

The Assembly also reflected a clear contrast in age profiles among the parties. While TVK’s contingent largely comprised younger members, the legislators from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) appeared relatively older.

The proceedings began with newly elected members taking the oath as MLAs. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay was the first to take the oath followed by ministers, except S. Keerthana, who could not take the oath as she had not brought her Certificate of Election .

Subsequently, leaders including Udhayanidhi Stalin, Edappadi K Palaniswami, and O. Panneerselvam took their oaths.

Vijay took his oath based on conscience, many others took the oath in the name of God.

The oath taking is expected to continue until around 2 pm, when all the members are done.

AIADMK’s C V Shanmugham, who came to the House and left in the middle, took the oath in the afternoon in the presence of Assembly pro-term speaker.

Usha Rani, the AIADMK MLA from Yercaud forgot to bring her Certificate of Election and could not take the oath. TVK MLA S Keerthana took the oath at the end of the session.

Meanwhile, TVK’s Thousands Lights MLA JCD Prabhakaran filed his nomination for the post of speaker. Prabhakar had won twice from the Villivakkam constituency.

The Assembly will meet on Tuesday morning to elect the speaker and deputy speaker.
