India will resume tourist visa services for Bangladesh nationals on June 28, ending a nearly two-year suspension as the neighbors move to repair relations.

The decision will “further strengthen people-to-people ties between our two sovereign nations,” India’s new high commissioner to the neighboring country, Dinesh Trivedi, said at a media briefing in Dhaka Thursday.

New Delhi’s visa freeze began after the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, a political shift that strained bilateral relations, particularly during the subsequent interim government’s term.

India’s announcement to lift the suspension coincided with a meeting between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Beijing. Li expressed China’s willingness to import more Bangladeshi products and develop infrastructure, including ports and water conservation projects, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Beijing wants to deepen cooperation across trade, supply chains, finance, new energy, and artificial intelligence, the report said.

India and China are seeking closer ties with Rahman’s government, which came to power in February.
