Those escorted out of the American Diabetes Association’s annual meeting included Justin Ryder, a paediatric obesity researcher at Northwestern Medicine, and Steven Kahn, the editor-in-chief of Diabetes Care

Updated - June 06, 2026 at 09:38 AM.

Five prominent obesity scientists, including the editor-in-chief of a leading diabetes journal and researchers who work with major pharmaceutical companies, were kicked out of the industry’s biggest annual meeting while handing out an editorial criticizing the Trump administration’s health policies.

Those escorted out of the American Diabetes Association’s annual meeting in New Orleans included Justin Ryder, a paediatric obesity researcher at Northwestern Medicine, and Steven Kahn, the editor-in-chief of Diabetes Care. T

hey were handing out copies of an editorial to attendees when at least three police officers escorted them out of the conference center. Copies of the editorial were also confiscated.

The ADA said the attendees were removed by onsite security for violating the conference code of conduct, and noted that they were “given the opportunity to cease this behavior and chose not to.” The diabetes association didn’t detail the exact nature of the violation.

“Our conference code of conduct expects that all participants will conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner,” according to the statement. “They demonstrated behavior not consistent with this code of conduct.”

The editorial was written by Kahn and others, including John Buse, a high-profile researcher from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and one of Pfizer Inc.’s principal investigators. Buse told Bloomberg he wasn’t ejected because he was in another meeting when the police arrived.

“There have been actions by the administration that have caused grave health consequences, and their current approach will continue to do so,” according to the editorial published on April 29.

Ryder said he was told the diabetes association would have him arrested if he tries to return to the conference. Buse said he and others will stage a walkout if all of the researchers aren’t allowed back into the meeting.

The altercation was recorded and posted online by MedPage Today.
