Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani received a phone call from India’s Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar where they discussed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry stated in a social media post on Monday.

The conversation, acknowledged by Jaishankar in a post on Sunday, comes amid growing regional anxiety, with US President Donald Trump issuing a fresh ultimatum to Iran over the weekend. Trump had warned that unless the Strait of Hormuz is reopened by Tuesday night, the US would target Iran’s vital civilian infrastructure.

“During the call, they reviewed the developments of the military escalation in the region and its serious repercussions on regional and international security and stability, as well as ways to resolve all disputes peacefully. They also emphasized the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation,” Qatar’s post noted.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman emphasised the urgent need to halt “unjustified Iranian attacks” on Qatar and other nations in the region, warning against the “irresponsible” targeting of vital infrastructure, particularly that related to water, food, and energy facilities.  “His Excellency also emphasised the need to strengthen coordination, intensify joint efforts, return to the negotiating table, and prioritise reason and wisdom to contain the crisis, thereby ensuring global energy security, freedom of navigation, environmental safety, and preserving regional stability,” it added.

On Sunday, Jaishankar spoke to his counterparts in Qatar and UAE and also got a call from the Iranian Foreign Minister on the West Asia crisis, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated at a press briefing on Monday.

Call with the Iranian Minister is especially important as Tehran has rejected Trump’s ultimatum on opening the Strait of Hormuz as it said the conditions were unbalanced.
