A sudden fire broke out in the industrial waste stage area of an automobile company in Sriperumbudur on Sunday (May 31, 2026) and the smoke created flutter among the road users using the Chennai-Bengaluru highway.
Kancheepuram Police said several automobile and other ancillary companies are operating in the SIPCOT industrial complex in Sriperumbudur. Hyundai Mobis company is engaged in the manufacturing of automotive spare parts including the airbag mechanism and audio systems. At about 3.30 p.m., a sudden fire erupted in the factory’s waste storage area.
The small fire helped by a gust of wind quickly spread throughout the factory with towering plumes of black smoke emanating from the sky. The company officials after alerting the Sriperumbudur police and the fire and rescue services department, immediately evacuated all the workers from the factory.
Fire tenders along with rescue personnel from both Sriperumbudur and Oragadam fire stations were despatched to the site. The fire and rescue services personnel brought the fire under control after more than four hours of operation in which two units in the factory have been completely destroyed.
