Heavy rain for more than a hour on Tuesday night exposed the ill-preparedness of the district administration in Mangaluru. In some areas, the rain washed away the soil covering pipelines that were laid as part of road works taken up as phase-2 of Nagarothana scheme, and thus making it difficult for people to commute.
There was widespread rain in Mangaluru and other parts of Dakshina Kannada on Tuesday night. In the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, Marodi Gram Panchayat in Belthangady taluk recorded the highest of 98 mm, followed by 75 mm in Bala of Mangaluru taluk, 72.5 mm at Padil in Mangaluru, 67 mm in Kotekar of Ullal taluk and Pandeshwar in Mangaluru, 58.2 mm in Surathkal, 54.5 mm in Kasba Bengre, 51.5 mm in Panjikallu and 50 mm in Rayee, both in Bantwal taluk, as per data posted by Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre.
Basement parking
Basement parking areas of several apartments in low-lying areas in the central part of Mangaluru were flooded.
The compound wall of Vanashree residential building, a few metres down from St. Theresa School in lower Bendoor area, collapsed into the storm-water drain and flooded the basement parking of the adjoining Chalet residential apartment. Residents joined to work till around 10 a.m. to drain out knee-high water accumulated in the basement. Residents of several houses in the area were seen removing waste, accumulated in their premises, after draining the water.
At the Prome Residency apartment in Seminary View Road/Seminary 2nd Cross Road in Jeppu, along with run-off water, gravel and mud covering the pipelines started accumulating at the basement parking area. Residents were forced to place stones to block entry of water to the basement.
Motorists faced difficulty moving across narrow roads of Seminary 2nd Cross and Seminary 1st Cross where craters were found at several points, which exposed pipelines laid beneath.
A huge old tree got uprooted and fell across Fr. Muller Road near Koragajja temple in Nandigudda on Wednesday morning and affected traffic movement for an hour. A portion of a tree fell across the road in Anegundi in Bejai. The heavy rain caused flooding in several stretches of Car Street. A car got damaged following the collapse of the compound wall of a building near Bajal Church. The Mangaluru City Corporation received complaints of water from drains entering houses.
Flooding was also witnessed at Bhagwan Mahaveer (Pumpwel) junction, near Ambedkar Circle, Falnir Road and near KMC Hospital Attavar on Tuesday night.
