The Supreme Court on Monday decided to examine a plea seeking the constitution of a selection committee for expeditious regular appointments to the posts of chairperson and members of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).
A Bench headed by CJI Surya Kant issued notices to the Delhi government and DERC on a petition filed by Energy Watchdog, an NGO. Represented by advocate Pranav Sachdeva, the petitioner stated that a dysfunctional DERC would lead to a pile-up of petitions and applications seeking redress in electricity and energy-related matters. The plea stated that the government had not taken any steps to appoint a judicial member to DERC.
“The present composition of DERC is contrary to law as it consists only of two pro tem members, lacks a chairperson, and does not include a person of law as a member, contrary to the mandate of the Supreme Court,” it stated.
