Former Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi, V.S. Raju, on Thursday said effective teaching goes beyond just delivering subject matter and that it should focus on developing students’ thinking skills, comprehension and creativity.
Addressing participants of a faculty development programme on “Teaching Methodologies and Improving Education through Outcome-Based Approaches under the New National Education Policy (NEP) 2020,” organised by the Department of Academic Advancement and Strengthening at Seshadri Rao Gudlavalleru Engineering College, Mr. Raju highlighted that student-focused teaching approaches, technology integration, and interactive discussion methods contribute to better learning outcomes. Describing teachers as architects of students’ futures, he also shared insights from his personal experiences through a powerpoint presentation.
Speaking on “Engineering Education-- Challenges and Issues,” Director of IIT-Tirupati K.N. Satyanarayana observed that engineering education must adapt to the evolving needs of the industry. He stressed the important role of faculty in fostering problem-solving abilities, research aptitude and innovative thinking among students and encouraged educators to strengthen their knowledge in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Automation and Data Science. He also discussed the practices followed at premier institutions and the positive results achieved through them.
Former Director of IIT-Bhubaneswar, R.V. Rajakumar, spoke on “Curriculum Framework in Line with NEP-2020” and explained that the aim of the NEP is to unlock students’ full potential. He said academic curricula should emphasise on outcome-based education, multi-disciplinary learning, project-oriented teaching, and internships.
Concluding the session on “Leverage AI for Outcome-Based Education,” former professor from IIT-Madras, N. Shiva Prasad, said that AI-driven teaching techniques can greatly enhance student learning outcomes. He explained that personalised learning, intelligent assessment methods and data-based evaluation systems can improve the quality of education. He also urged faculty members to integrate AI into their teaching practices.
