Under the scheme for stocking indigenous fish seed in rivers, Collector K. Elambahavath released four lakh fish fingerlings into the Stanley Reservoir in Mettur at Thippampatti here on Thursday (May 21, 2026).
According to an official release, the initiative was aimed at conserving and augmenting indigenous fish resources in rivers and reservoirs.
The Collector said annual targets were being fixed every year to improve fish stock in the Mettur reservoir. For 2025-26, a target of stocking 100 lakh fingerlings had been fixed, of which 84.40 lakh fingerlings had already been released. To achieve the remaining target, three lakh rohu fingerlings and one lakh mrigal fingerlings were released into the water spread area of the reservoir at Thippampatti. The initiative would help improve the livelihood of fishermen dependent on inland fishing and contribute to the growth of indigenous fish species, the release added.
Mettur Revenue Divisional Officer P. Sukumar, Assistant Director of Fisheries T. Uma Kalaichelvi and other officials were present.
