Former Kerala Director General of Police (DGP) P.J. Alexander passed away on Friday (May 8, 2026) while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 92. He had been under medical care for age-related ailments.
Dr. Alexander, a 1961-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, resided at Kowdiar and hailed from Kottarakkara. He retired from service in 1994 while serving as the chairman and managing director of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC). He began his professional career as a teacher at Kerala University before entering IPS and joining the Kerala Police.
His first appointment in the police force was as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Kozhikode. During his distinguished career, he served as Superintendent of Police in Palakkad, Kozhikode and Alappuzha.
In 1975, he was promoted as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and later held several key administrative and policing positions, including Joint Commissioner of the Revenue Board, DIG of Economic Offences and Security Intelligence. He also served as managing director of major public sector undertakings, including Travancore Titanium Products, Travancore Cements and Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).
Dr. Alexander became Inspector General (IG) in 1983 and later held important positions such as Crime IG and Director of the Institute of Management in Government (IMG).
Known for his academic excellence alongside his policing career, he earned a doctorate on the subject of law enforcement and public order.
Apart from his administrative achievements, he was also an author and had written four books. He is also credited with recommending major reforms in the functioning of Kerala Police.
