The last stone pillar of Veeravasantharayar mandapam in Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple that was destroyed in a fire in 2018 was erected as part of the reconstruction work on Thursday.
The fire that broke out from a shop damaged several stone pillars of the mandapam. The reconstruction work was sanctioned at a cost of ₹35.30 crore, a statement said.
Stones were cut from a hillock in Rasipuram in Namakkal district and were brought to Koodal Sengulam farm belonging to the temple. The pillar sculpturing works were carried out by Spathi V.P. Velmurugan of Tiruppur.
A total of 65,000 cubic feet of stones were brought and 79 pillars were carved out. The final pillar was erected in the presence of Joint Commissioner and Temple Executive Officer N. Suresh, members of the Board of Trustees and other officials.
