The travelling public in Mettupalayam, Karamadai, Periyanaickenpalayam and Thudiyalur have received an assurance from the Railways on their long-time demand for operation of the Mettupalayam-Coimbatore MEMU train with 12 coaches.
General Manager of Southern Railway R.N. Singh told public welfare organisations, during his recent visit for an inspection of Mettupalayam Railway Station, that the Palakkad Railway Division will shortly provide four additional coaches for the MEMU train that is too crowded as it is operated with only eight coaches.
Though the announcement on augmentation of the train with 12 coaches was made during February this year, there was no progress thereafter.
The Namma Mettupalayam Social Welfare Committee has been emphasising on the augmentation of the MEMU service citing the preference of the travelling public for travel by trains owing to affordability and reliability, as also to evade heavy road congestion.
