CPI (M) demands expedition of process of giving pattas to...

Communist Party of India (Marxist) members have appealed to Virudhunagar Collector, N.O. Sukhaputra, to expedite the process of giving patta to some 300 residents of Aathumedu as per the resolution passed by Virudhunagar Municipal council.

A petition was submitted by the party town secretary, M. Jeyabharath on Monday, when the weekly grievances redressal meeting was resumed on May 11 after the model code of conduct was withdrawn.

In his petition, Mr. Jeyabharath said that some 300 families were living for more than 40 years in the houses constructed in Aathumedu area in ward 35. The area had been inadvertently marked as pathway in the municipal map. Hence, the residents could not get patta for their land for long.

In the meanwhile, Sattur Revenue Divisional Officer conducted an enquiry on August 25, 2025 and promised that patta could be issued if the municipality passed a resolution recommending it to the Collector. Though the resolution was passed on December 31, 2025, the process of issuing patta was still pending. Municipal councillor, K. Jayakumar, and Stella Mary of AIDWA were present.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam has demanded that a direct paddy purchase centre be opened at Devadanam near Rajapalayam.

In his petition the association secretary, V. Murugan, said that paddy cultivation has been taken up in around 2,000 acres in and around Devadanam. As the paddy crop was ready for harvest, traders and middlemen were offering very low price for the farmers’ produce.

Stating that wild animals like elephants, wild boars were often destroying the crop, the district administration should immediately open the DPC for the benefit of the farmers, the petition said.
