Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Tuesday (April 28, 2026) he welcomed Russia’s support for diplomacy and praised the strength of ties between the two countries, after meeting with President Vladimir Putin on Monday (April 27, 2026), saying recent events had demonstrated the depth of their strategic partnership.
Russia has offered to mediate to try to help restore calm to West Asia following the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran that Moscow has strongly condemned.
Russia has also repeatedly offered to store Iran’s enriched uranium as a way of defusing tensions, a proposal spurned by the United States.
French FM says Iran must make 'major concessions' to end crisis
France said on Monday that Iran must be ready to make “major concessions” to end a crisis, as countries piled pressure on Tehran at a UN session on its control of the key Strait of Hormuz.
“There can be no lasting solution to this crisis unless the Iranian regime agrees to major concessions and a radical shift in its stance,” Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot told the UN Security Council.
Ms. Barrot said that Iran must show a way “to peaceful coexistence within its region and for the Iranian people to be able to build their own future freely,” months after the cleric-run state ruthlessly repressed mass protests.

Iran FM blames U.S. for failure of talks as he meets Putin
Iran’s top diplomat blamed Washington on Monday for the failure of West Asia peace talks during a visit to Russia, where President Vladimir Putin promised him Moscow’s support in ending the war.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was in Saint Petersburg on a whirlwind diplomatic tour, having sandwiched a trip to Oman in between two visits to Pakistan, the main mediator in the West Asia war.
“The U.S. approaches caused the previous round of negotiations, despite progress, to fail to reach its goals because of the excessive demands,” Mr. Araghchi said on Monday.

Trump unhappy with Iranian proposal: U.S. official
A U.S. official said on Monday that President Donald Trump is unhappy with an Iranian proposal because it did not address Iran’s nuclear program.
“He doesn’t love the proposal,” the U.S. official said, referring to Mr. Trump.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Trump discussed the proposal with his top national security aides. The U.S.-Iran conflict remains in a stalemate, with energy supplies from the region reduced.
Iranian sources earlier on Monday said the proposal would set aside discussion of Iran’s nuclear program until the war has ended and disputes over shipping from the Gulf are resolved. Washington has said nuclear issues must be dealt with from the outset.
