Stray cattle grazing on plants grown along the medians of national highways passing through Tiruchi city has become a cause for concern among motorists and poses a serious threat to road safety.
The menace is reportedly severe along the Tiruchi–Chennai National Highway near the Cauvery bridge and at Mannarpuram, the Tiruchi–Madurai National Highway near Edamalaipattipudur, and the Tiruchi–Dindigul National Highway near Pirattiyur within the city limits.
The Tiruchi–Madurai National Highway, which serves as an access route to the new integrated bus stand at Panjapur, witnesses heavy vehicular movement throughout the day.
Road users say cattle are frequently seen roaming these highways. The animals are often let loose to graze shrubs and plants maintained along the medians, forcing motorists to slow down suddenly or swerve to avoid collision. The movement of animals on the highways becomes particularly dangerous during peak hours, with sudden crossings posing a risk to two-wheelers and fast-moving vehicles.
In several instances, herders were seen sitting along the roadside while the animals roamed service roads and carriageways. Road users alleged that owners intentionally allowed cows and goats to graze along the medians as fresh vegetation is available there throughout the year, especially on stretches located near peripheral areas of the city that are easily accessible.
Recent rainfall has led to abundant grass and weed growth along the medians, attracting more cattle to these stretches.
Despite efforts by the Tiruchi Corporation to curb the menace by impounding stray cattle and imposing penalties on owners, the problem continues on highways passing through the city. Residents say stricter enforcement was needed on highway stretches within the city limits.
“Authorities should take immediate steps to prevent cattle grazing on medians and ensure safer movement of vehicles. Strict action must be taken against owners who allow animals onto busy highway stretches,” said N. Jamaludeen, a civic activist.
