Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg on Monday directed the Water Supply Engineering Department to formulate comprehensive, long-term plans to cater to the water requirements of upcoming industries without disrupting the domestic supply lines of the city.

The Commissioner, along with senior officials, conducted an extensive on-site inspection of the Tatipudi Reservoir, the Krishnapuram Head Water Works Water Treatment Plant (WTP), and the associated high-capacity pump houses.

During the review, Superintending Engineer (Water Supply) Pallamraju, VISCO Advisor P. Siva Prasada Raju, and Technical Advisor Jaganmohana Rao apprised the Commissioner that 11 MGD (Million Gallons per Day) of raw water is currently drawn from the Tatipudi Reservoir. This water undergoes processing at the Krishnapuram WTP before distribution.

The officials brought to his notice that the management of the upcoming JSW Industrial Parks Development Area, located near Tatipudi, has formally requested GVMC for bulk water allocations to sustain its upcoming industrial ecosystem.

Following a detailed inspection of the water purification process, chemical treatment setups, and SCADA-integrated pumping modules, Commissioner Garg expressed the need for optimal maintenance protocols.

“There must be zero operational lapses or technical shortcomings in the functioning of the WTP and pump houses. Maintenance schedules must be upgraded to ensure seamless operations,” Mr. Garg said.

To enforce continuous monitoring, the Commissioner instructed the deployed desk engineers and field staff to reside within the immediate vicinity of the plants. This step aims to eliminate response delays during emergency technical breakdowns and guarantee uninterrupted supply.

Later, the civic chief visited the JSW Industrial Parks facility to inspect their miniature layout plans and identify critical consumption nodes. Following a consultation with the industrial park’s Project Director regarding their net volumetric requirements, the Commissioner directed SE Pallamraju to execute a thorough feasibility study.

The engineering wing has been tasked with drafting technical proposals to supply water from the existing Tatipudi-GVMC conduit framework while stringently ensuring that Visakhapatnam’s urban domestic network remains entirely unaffected.
