In a shocking incident, a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary attempted self immolation at Maharajapuram junction, under Pazhavoor police limits of Tirunelveli district.
According to police, the victim was identified as V. Esakkiyappan, 43, from Chettikulam near Kudankulam. He allegedly poured petrol and set himself ablaze in an attempt to end life, while in an inebriated state.
Noticing him, people nearby rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire, and alerted the police.
He was immediately taken to Government Kanniyakumari Medical College and Hospital at Asaripallam, where he is undergoing intensive treatment.
Preliminary inquiry alleged that the man is a TVK functionary and that he attempted self-immolation demanding TVK leader C. Joseph Vijay be made the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
A source from the hospital said that Esakkiyappan has sustained 90% of burn injuries, and plastic surgeons were providing treatment.
