A youth who drove away with an ice cream delivery vehicle was apprehended by members of the public after a chase of about six kilometres in Erode on Friday (May 1, 2026).

According to police, the vehicle, which had been dispatched from Tiruchengode to supply ice cream to shops, was parked at Kokkarayanpettai in Namakkal district when the driver stepped into a nearby shop. Taking advantage of the situation, the youth allegedly got into the vehicle and drove off. On hearing the driver’s alarm, local residents chased the vehicle in cars and two-wheelers. The vehicle was driven at high speed along the Erode Ring Road, during which it reportedly hit parked two-wheelers and a temporary canopy in front of a house.
