The district administration has imposed certain regulations for lorries transporting minerals to neighbouring Kerala from the district following frequent traffic jams at Puliyarai and the accidents.

In a statement, District Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore said lorries carrying milk, marine products and the vegetables, passengers going to Thiruvananthapuram Airport and the ambulances rushing patients to the hospitals in Kerala are often held-up in the traffic jam at Puliyarai. To ensure the safety of the road-users and avert traffic snarl on this busy highway, certain regulations are being imposed for the movement of mineral-laden lorries.

Accordingly, the mineral-laden lorries should be operated along this road between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Mondays to Fridays. Moreover, the mineral trucks will be allowed between Saturday 4 p.m. and Monday 6 a.m. also.

The lorries’ registration numbers ending with odd numbers will be allowed on odd dates – i.e. 1, 3, 5, 7... and the trucks with even registration numbers on even dates like 2, 4, 6.

“This arrangement, which is to be implemented to avert traffic jam and consequent accidents, will come into force from Sunday (May 10). Hence, the truck operators should strictly follow this regulation and cooperate with the district administration. Vehicles violating this instruction will be seized,” Mr. Kamal Kishore warned.
