Chairman of Karnataka Legislature Committee on Public Undertakings T. Raghumurthy said here on Wednesday that the committee will submit an interim report to the government in July that Mangaluru needs ₹1,250 crore for upgrading and augmenting its underground drainage (UGD) infrastructure in the jurisdiction of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).

Speaking to presspersons ahead of a meeting of the committee, comprising both MLAs and MLCs as its members, the chairman said that the report will be tabled in the Monsoon Session of the legislature in July.

He said the officials concerned have told the committee that the fund required is to meet the demand for UGD infrastructure (such as network of underground drainage pipelines to be laid, wet wells and sewage treatment plants to be built) for the projected population of 8 lakh in the city by 2046.

Ravichandra Naik, MCC Commissioner, said that only 65% of the area under the corporation now has UGD network. There is a need to build 180 km of new UGD network and upgrade 185 km of network with associated facilities.

Udupi projects

Mr. Raghumurthy said that KUIDFC officials in Udupi have told the committee that three water supply projects taken up in Udupi city will be completed by January, 2027.

Of these, a project costing ₹106.92 crore taken up in 2018, from Asian Development Bank grant, will be over by September 30, 2026. This project has achieved 94% physical progress and 87.45% financial progress.

Another project taken up in 2019 under AMRUT scheme and costing ₹116.54 crore will be completed by December, 2026. It has achieved 91.64% physical progress and 91.33% financial progress.

The third project costing ₹50.80 crore taken up in 2021 with grants from Karnataka government will be over by January, 2027. The project has witnessed 93.04% physical progress and 88.91% financial progress, the chairman said, quoting officials.

MLCs Ivan D’Souza and Kishore Kumar Puttur and other members of the committee were present.
