Thoothukudi experienced sudden rainfall accompanied by strong winds on Monday evening.
For the past few days, the district has been experiencing intense heat during the daytime, making it difficult for people to move around outdoors. However, on Sunday dark clouds formed and a tornado was reported in the surrounding areas of Vagaikulam, causing damage as it moved through the region.
On Monday evening, Thoothukudi experienced a moderate shower accompanied by thunderstorms. The rain lashed for about half an hour. Although low lying areas in the city experienced water stagnation due to the sudden downpour, the rainfall brought much needed relief from intense heat, resulting in a more pleasant weather across the region.
According to an official from Thoothukudi District Disaster Management Department, several houses were damaged in the Mudivaithannendal village due to the tornado that struck Vagaikulam region on Sunday.
The official added that the survey is yet to be completed for the final figures, stating that the electricity board has restored power supply in the village and reinstalled damaged electric poles.
