Healthcare workers and union members staged a protest at the Ripon Buildings premises on Thursday against the implementation of an app-based attendance system, which led to loss of pay even at the slightest delay, according to the nurses.

The AITUC Federation had submitted a petition to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner G.S. Sameeran, stating that staff at Urban Primary Health Centres across 15 zones received salaries for only up to 10 days.

The union demanded the immediate disbursal of pending wages and requested the maintenance of a manual attendance register alongside the application.

A.R. Shanthi, secretary, Doctors’ Association for Social Equality, urged the civic body to rectify software glitches, stating that the application failed to account for various shift timings. She also demanded eight-hour work shifts, compensatory time off, and paid maternity leave.

Representing the protesters, N. Beulah John Selvaraj submitted their demands to the GCC Commissioner, who assured them that the pending salary, including the reconciled five days’ pay that was due on June 5, would be credited soon.

‘Some received salary’

Sridevi, a nurse, said on Saturday that of the nearly 1,700 employees in the department, some had received the payment, while others expected to receive it on Monday.
